Winc Wine Club Review

Updated: March 2018
Winc is an innovative wine delivery service that is great for wine lovers of all ages, but has an edge with the younger generations. Winc is different from its competitors because you can to take a fun wine quiz that helps determine your “wine personality” and matches up your flavor and taste preferences with the best wines they have. This is a fun way to start your subscription with and you feel more confident in knowing you will love the wines you receive.

Winc also has a simple delivery system – you get 4 wines in each shipment, can choose a combination of reds, whites, and rose, and delivery is always free. They are a monthly subscription-based service, but there are no membership fees, and you can cancel or skip any month you want.

Sustainable, efficient wine club memberships for all.

Rating and Scoring

Wine Selection: (Rating: 9/10)

In your monthly box you have a choice of red wine, white wine, and rose wine. You can choose 2 red 2 white, 1 red 3 white, or no red and 4 white (white wine includes rose). Each shipment always comes with 4 bottles of wine. Once you take your simple and fun wine personality quiz, you are matched up with the top 4 recommended wines for your taste preferences. You can either stick with those wines or you can opt for a different available wine they have for that month.

Wines are mixture of international and US wines and they are all quite unique and many come in some really cool and funky bottles, which I believe the younger generation really loves and appreciates. They generally do not feature any rare, collectible, or vintage wines because Winc does not cater to that crowd of wine drinkers, so this is expected.

Wine Quality: (Rating: 10/10)

The quality of the wines I received were great and I loved all of them. Bottles are generally under $20, with some closer to the $50 range. Winc is unique because they do not have a variety of club memberships to choose from. For ease of use and simplicity, Winc has one main subscription, which is the four bottles of wine per month, and that is all.

Wine Pricing: (Rating: 10/10)

There are no contracts, startup fees, and you can cancel anytime you want or simply skip as many months as you want without canceling your membership. You will be billed every month until you cancel or skip. You do not get any sign up bonuses, but they do offer generous discounts on their wines and you never pay full price for a bottle, plus shipping is always free. Generally, 4 bottles of wine will cost around $52 per month (about $13/bottle), but will increase from there if your choose the more expensive wine bottles. Shipping is Free.

Overall, I think Winc has low pricing for receiving 4 bottles if you choose the more reasonably priced options. Many other wine clubs start around $40 per month but you only get 2-3 bottles on wine per month.

Memberships: (Rating: 8/10)

You only have one membership option, which makes it very simple, but can also be a drawback for some people. You do not have many special perks like a wine consultant or sign up bonus, but you do get discounted bottles of wine every month which can save a lot of money. You can reorder any one the wines you got for that month you really liked for the same discounted price.

There are no limited duration memberships, and you will be billed monthly until you cancel or skip a month. Also, those that have gift certificates for the clubs find that they are automatically enrolled into ongoing monthly shipments and that it is difficult to cancel. However, it should be noted that this is a wine club – not a one-time purchase site. Therefore, individuals should be aware that they are entering into a club and to cancel if they do not want the on-going membership.

It does not appear they offer any kind of money back guarantee since there is no information about that on their website.

Packaging/Shipping: (Rating: 10/10)

The Winc box is tall and slender and is stamped with the Win name on the box, so you know exactly what it is. There is a convenient plastic handle on the top of the box so it makes carry your wine box as easy as can be! The box opens from the top and your four bottles of wine are shipped in the box standing upright cradles by a thick cardboard separator.

They also include their Winc catalog on top as well. Shipping was very fast, which is always wonderful. My shipment was shipped out to me the following day after my order was placed and I received my wine the same Friday of that week – shipping basically took 2 days.

Gift Worthiness: (Rating: 8/10)

With Winc, you can send a special someone a Winc gift card so they can go through the ordering process on their own. At first, this may seem like a disadvantage, but it turns out to be much better because you want your recipient to take their own wine personality test so they are matched up to wines that specifically meet their tastes.

You can also choose to gift a fun wine gift box. They have quite a variety of options like a popcorn and wine box, white wine and red tasting boxed with wine glasses, candles, chocolates etc. they make it simple and elegant, which is perfect for gift giving. It does not seem they have an option for a personalized note card and there are no specific corporate gift options.

Customer Service/Support: (Rating: 10/10)

Winc has phone, email, and live chat customer support. They were very responsive and helpful in the live chat and were pleasant to talk to. I wound up canceling my membership right through the chat and it was simple, fast, and no hassle at all. I was not made to feel terrible about canceling my membership and did not feel obligated to stay.

Who Would Winc Most Appeal To?

I think this club will most appeal to millennials for its fun, simple, and no fuss philosophy. You get great wines specifically to your taste, shipping is free and fast, pricing is great, and the whole vibe of the company is fresh, minimalistic, and elegant. I think this is also great for people who are just starting out on their wine journey and are looking for something that will guide them through that experience without the stuffiness of some other wines clubs.

Notes from our Last Shipment

In my shipment from Winc, I opted for the 1 red and 3 whites. Ultimately, I got the following wines:

  • Summer Water – 2016 Rose Central Coast
  • Pas Ordinaire – 2016 Red Blend – Languedoc, France
  • Funk Zone – 2016 White Blend
  • Outer Sounds – 2017 Sauvignon Back – New Zealand

The Summer Water was an awesome rose that was very fruity, but also had some earthiness as well. It is perfect for summer drinking with meat, seafood, cheeses, etc. I wish it were a tad less acidic, but overall, it was balanced quite well. It had notes of grapefruit, lemon peel, and floral rose.

Funk Zone was my other rose and it came in a really fun bottle, which I always really love. The tasting notes were cranberry, rose, and strawberry, which give this wine a very fruity and floral-like essence. It was very bright and refreshing, but it was also dry and not sweet like you may expect.

New Zealand whites are some of my favorite wines, so the Outer Sounds one was a great addition to my box. This white was fruit, dry, and had that earthiness that NZ wines typically have. Its tasting notes were grapefruit, guava, and lemon making it bright, refreshing, clean, and acidic. It pairs very well with fish and salads.

And lastly, the French Red Blend was very earthy and fruity, although I think there was more earthiness to it than fruit. Spice, cherry, and aromatic dried herbs make up the overall flavor profile of this wine. It is a medium bodied red, is made from organic grapes and pairs well with hearty stews, pork, white and red meats, and rich cheeses.

The box also came with a pretty booklet with information about how to use Winc. It also goes through “The A-Z of Wine” which discusses the fundamentals of tasting wines and terminology to learn like what acidity is, what body means, what different wines like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are, and so much more. The information is paired with neat graphics and colors to make it a fun experience. You learn so much from this little booklet. In the back of the book they also include their favorite and most popular wines.

I also received an email after I got my wines with different recipes to pair with the 4 wines I got, which I thought was very cool. Email makes the recipes easy to access from anywhere and also saves paper!

What We Like and What We Don't Like About Winc

I really appreciate that fact you get 4 bottles of wine per shipment for a very affordable price. This is more wine than you generally get from other wine clubs. Furthermore, shipping is very fast and you will likely get your order the same week you place it, which is always a wonderful perk. The packaging of the wine is protective, simple, and minimalistic and the carrying handle on the top of the box makes it super easy to carry into your house or apartment.

The wine personality quiz to match you up with your preferred flavors is also fun and a great way to make sure you get wines you will enjoy. Even though it matches you up with the best wines for your taste, you can go in and choose other wines you may want to try more, which makes your Winc experience customizable and flexible. Most other wine clubs do not give this type of option. You can also choose if you want all white, all red, or 1 red and 4 whites.

There are no sign-up fees or cancelation fees and they make canceling your subscription simple – you can cancel by phone or even on their live chat. This is a nice feature because many people don’t want to have to deal with speaking to someone over the phone to cancel a subscription.

Winc has been recommended by a number of popular publications such as GQ, Vogue, Whole Foods, Refinery29, Barclay Center Brooklyn, and Hollywood Bowl.

Although there are not many negatives about Winc, it is important to note that they don’t have a refund policy if you don’t like they like you receive and there is no satisfaction guarantee. That means if you don’t like the wine, you will be stuck with it. Many other wine clubs have a money-back guarantee if you don’t like your wine.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed my Winc experience. It was fun, easy to use, completely hassle free, and shipping was super fast. The wines I got matched to my tastes perfectly courtesy of the fun and effective wine personality quiz. I think most people who are looking for a simple wine club, with great wines, and no confusing membership levels, and great discounted prices will thoroughly appreciate Winc.

I hardly have anything bad to say about this awesome company, and new wine drinkers and millennials are sure to find Winc an appealing wine club option.
