Cellars Wine Club Review

Cellars Wine Club offers a wide variety of wine of the month clubs that are specifically designed to suit every taste, every preference and every budget. Their wines are handpicked by in-house wine experts and the club is devoted to wine education. Cellars Wine was originally founded in 1999 in Seattle as a small internet wine club. Today they have exploded into one of the largest wine of the month clubs with the biggest selection. The currently offer 12 different clubs to select from!

Cellars Wine Club has a fun and sophisticated new age vibe, that is great for the younger generations of wine drinkers or those who are looking for a wine club with some spunk. They feature wines from right here in the US and wines from all around the globe.

They are committed to only providing their members with the best wine possible and have a “no bad bottle” money-back guarantee. This wine club has no membership fee, obligations, and shipping is always free. Another huge perk is you can choose 15% of your purchase price go to one of their vetted non-profit organizations with no extra charge to you.

A wine club that offers numerous wine of the month club options to choose from to suit every taste.

Scoring/Rating

Wine Selection: (Rating: 9/10)

Cellars has a very large selection of wine clubs to choose from – they have more than most other wine clubs offer. This is great if you need a club with a wide variety. You can choose between a special club that only offers one bottle of wine per month, or go with one of their other clubs that include two bottles of wine per shipment. They also offer a red trio club and a few case clubs that come with 12 bottles of wine in each shipment.

Unless you choose a reds only club, the other clubs let you choose between all red, all whites, or a mixture of the two. They also have special clubs like the Sweet Club, West Coast Club, Sparkling Club, Natural Club, 90+ Point Club, and International Club.

Their case clubs od 12 wines include Premium, International, and 90+ Point Club.

Wine Quality: (Rating: 10/10)

I thought the quality from this club was very good, if not higher than some of the other wine clubs on the market. They have a designated team that handpicks the wines that go out in each shipment. If you want to make sure you are getting the best quality wines possible, you can opt for their 90+ Point club that offers rare, vintage, collectible, and very high quality wines from around the world.

Bottle Club – for special occasions or if you just want to receive one bottle of premium wine per month.
Premium Club – 2 bottles per shipment with wines from all over the world. (this is the club we ordered)
International Club – features 2 bottles of wine per month with a focus on only the best international wines.
Sweet Club – if you like sweet wines that are not dry, this 2 bottle wine club is perfect for you.
West Coast Club – features 2 bottles of wine from all over California.
Sparkling Club – features 2 bottles of the most delicious sparkling wine and champagne.
Red Trio Club – great for the serious red wine and rose lover, this club comes with 3 bottles of high-quality red wines.
Natural Club – features 2 bottles of organic, biodynamic, wild fermentation, low or no sulfates, or unusually produced wine.
90+ Point Club – features wines that only have 90+ plus points.

Premium Case Club
International Case Club
90+ Point Case Club

The case clubs are the same as described above, but they come with 12 bottles per shipment instead of only 2.

Wine Price: (Rating: 7/10)

There are no membership fees or hidden costs with Cellars Wine Club. They also offer free shipping on all orders, which is a bonus. However, shipping takes a very long time as they only ship out on or around the 20th of every month. Therefore, if you order at the beginning of the month, you will have to wait a month or more until your wines ships out and arrives at your home. You can opt for pay for expedited shipping if you so choose. You can cancel your membership or skip any month you do not want to receive your wine box.

Wines clubs are a bit more expensive than their competition, with 2 bottles of wine costing anywhere between $42 and $79 dollars. There are other clubs that have 2-4 bottles of wine for $40 or less per month, so Cellars may not be the best option for budget wine enthusiasts.

  • Bottle Club – $29 per shipment
  • Premium Club – $42 per shipment
  • International Club – $49 per shipment
  • Sweet Club – $49 per shipment
  • West Coast Club – $49 per shipment
  • Sparkling Club – $55 per shipment
  • Red Trio Club – $59 per shipment
  • Natural Club – $65 per shipment
  • 90+ Point Club – $79 per shipment
  • Premium Case Club – $139 per shipment
  • International Case Club – $216 per shipment
  • 90+ Point Case Club – $389 per shipment

Memberships: (Rating: 9.5/10)

Cellars have a huge variety of membership and clubs options you can choose from. You can feel confident knowing there is a club option to best suit your needs and tastes. Memberships include a great variety of wines like all reds, all whites, combinations, rose, sparkling, natural and organic, international, and much more! Memberships come with free shipping, there are no membership fees, and you can make changes to your order by the 7th of every month.

You also have the options to choose memberships as ongoing until you cancel or you can choose a designated period of time from 2-12 months and pay in full. You can also choose to receive wines every month, every other month, or quarterly.

Cellars also offers a “no bad bottle” guarantee so if your wine arrives damaged or if a bottle goes bag, they will replace it for free of charge. This does not include wines you personally don’t like, which is a bit of a drawback. There is no clear information about the ability to reorder wines you like or if there are any membership perks, like a percentage off future wine orders. All they state is if you sign up for their newsletter you can receive special discounts and coupons from time to time.

Packaging/Shipping: (Rating: 6/10)

Cellars shipping process is far from ideal. If you expect to get your monthly shipments quickly for the first time you order, this will likely not be the case. Cellars only ships out on the 20th of every month, so if you first sign up at the beginning of the month, you will have to wait until the 20th for it to ship and then wait an additional amount of time until it arrives at your home. This is something to keep in mind as most other clubs will ship out within a few days and you will have your wines the same week.

The package was pretty lackluster and there was nothing really special about it. The box was not marked with their name or logo and was just plain. On the inside you only get a regular sheet of printer paper with black and white text with minimal information about your wines and wineries they are from. There is no color magazines, no recipe pairings, pictures, booklets, information on the wine club, etc. This is very disappointing considering the higher price point of the wine club.

Gift Worthiness: (Rating: 8/10)

Most of their wine clubs can be sent as a gift to your recipient of choice. You can preselect the duration you want to send them, what club you want to gift, and pay an upfront payment. You do have to commit for 2 shipments since clubs have a 2 month minimum.

Unfortunately, you cannot send a gift card that allows your recipient to choose which club they want, so you must know the person you are gifting the wine to well enough to choose for them. They also don’t have any special gift packaging, customizable notes, or any wine accessories to send along with the wine shipment like many other clubs offer.

Also, they don't have individual wine gifts that are outside of the club membership. So, with Cellars, your only option is a wine club or nothing. Unfortunately this could be a turn off for some – especially those that do not want to commit a recipient to a membership or that want to order bottles or baskets separately.

Customer Service/Support: (Rating: 8/10)

Cellars Wine Club is still a locally owned operation in Washington. They have a toll-free number that is available Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm PST and an email customer service section. The limited customer service hours may be an issue for customers with concerns – especially if a shipment arrives broken on the weekend. But, most clubs have limited office hours to Monday through Friday; therefore, it does not necessarily make them stand out. You also do not have a live chat option, which is a drawback. Unlike other clubs, they have a reputation for taking every customer call seriously and their staff is very friendly and knowledgeable.

Who Would Cellars Wine Club Most Appeal To?

Cellars Wine Club is going to appeal the most to wine drinkers who are just focused on drinking high-quality wines and are not looking for additional perks, fast shipping, or much of anything fancy or unique. Cellars puts all their focus into picking the best wines and they don’t focus a lot on the shipping, membership perks like reordering wines for a discounted price, or the packaging.

The bottom line is, Cellars is solely good for getting the best wines possible each month and not for the perks generally associated with other wine clubs.

Notes From Our Last Cellars Shipment

I received 2 bottles of wine in my shipment and they were Tintero Elvio – Italy – 2015 Arneis DOC Langhe and Juan Ramon Lozano – Spain – 2016 Rey De Copas Viura La Mancha.

The Tintero Elvio was a light and refreshing wine that is described as soft, juicy, and fruity in flavor. It was very easy and smooth to drink and would do really well with seafood and salads in the spring and summer. I also think this wine would be great in a sangria!

Juan Ramon was a very bright and citrusy wine with flavors of lemons, limes, and maybe even a grapefruit essence as well. It was light in flavor and I thought it could be a little more flavor forward and it lacked a little bit of depth. But overall, it was great to drink. Pairing this wine with fresh salads and seafood would be great as well and it is also recommended for pairing with rich dishes to help cut through the richness of the food.

What We Like and What We Don't Like About Cellars Wine Club

We really enjoy the fact that Cellars Wine Club has so many different options when it comes to memberships. This allows everyone to enjoy something and even more so, they can swap between clubs so that they get a full variety of wine club experiences without having to change clubs. We also love that they include shipping in their monthly membership, which makes them an affordable option – especially when other companies charge upwards of $20 or more to ship the wines.

Cellars does have a great rating with the BBB, which is always a plus in these types of clubs. They do pride themselves on offering what they say they are going to offer, fulfill orders and satisfy customers – so if you purchase from them, you can rest assured you will get what you expect.

Their per bottle price is still higher than other clubs, but they do deal with better quality wines than more budget-friendly clubs – so it is a trade off. We wish that they had more in-depth information for wine club members or other perks, but not all wine clubs offer this, so it does not necessarily make us not want to choose them.

Even though the price might be slightly higher than some other wine clubs, they do offer some great quality wines and have a lot of different club options for all different tastes and preferences. Shipping is always free.

I also liked how some of their clubs were really unique like the Sweet, Natural, West Coast, and Sparkling Club options. Many other clubs do not offer these kinds of categories so this is another special feature.

I did not like the packaging. Packaging is pretty simple and not unique, the box is not marked with a logo, the bottles are not wrapped, and they only include a very disappointing and lackluster piece of black and white printer paper with limited info on the wine and wineries you get in your box. For a higher price point, you should have a much better, more special, and fun experience.

I do not like that their contact and customer support is limited. There are no weekend hours, they are only open 9 am to 4 pm during the week, and there is no live chat.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Cellars Wine Club offers a fresh take on an older and more traditional wine club, which we can see from their website and unique variety of membership options. They cater to many different wine preferences and although their price point is higher than other clubs, the quality of wine makes up for that. Cellars is truly a club that mostly focuses on giving their customer high-quality wines, and they struggle in other areas like additional perks, customer service, fast and efficient shipping, and packaging.
