Premier Series Review – The California Wine Club
How Does The California Wine Club Work?
The California Wine Club is a membership or subscription-based wine club that sends wines to your home every month, every other monthly, or quarterly depending on the frequency you choose.
They focus on bringing wines to their members from small, family-owned California wineries so you are getting wines crafted with a lot of love and attention. Many of the wines they choose are award-winning, 90+ point, high quality wines. Every wine they choose to include in their monthly boxes are hand selected.
Customers can choose between seven different plans or membership levels that cater to all tastes and price points. You can also choose if you want to receive two wines or 4 wines per box all red, all white, or a combination of red and white.
Their base level is their Premier Series (starting at $40) from The California Wine Club and the most popular. It includes handcrafted award-winning wines from California. The Premier Series is also the club series we ordered, tested and are reviewing in this article.
The Signature Series (starting at $134) is geared towards collectors and connoisseurs who want the highest rated and most coveted wines from California wineries.
If you want something even more exclusive, you can choose their Aged Cabernet Series (starting at $231) where you get Napa Valley Cabernets aged for 8-12 years from iconia California wineries.
If you are someone who prefers Red Wines, they The California Wine Club has a series tailored just for you with their Simply Red's Series (starting at $40.46) where you get two different red wines, each one from a different artisan winery.
For those who prefer getting a case of wine at a time to share with friends and family, The California Wine Club offers their Case Club Series (starting at $159) where you get twelve (3 bottles each of four different wines) handcrafted wines, each hand-selected from an artisan winery.
And lastly, they have an International Series (starting at $71) for international wine offerings, and a Pacific Northwest Series (starting at $77) that features wines from small Oregon and Washington wineries.
How Was the Ordering Process
The ordering process was pretty straight forward and easy as could be. You select the club you want and whether you want all reds, all whites or one of each. Then you can either select to have it shipped as a gift for someone else or as a membership for yourself. If you select to gift the club you can then select how many months you'd like to give. If you select the membership for yourself – depending upon the club you will be asked if you wish to receive shipments monthly, every other month, or quarterly.
One really nice option allows you can choose to have it shipped to another address even if you select the membership for yourself. This makes shipping to a work address a breeze – as you will need someone over the age or 21 to sign for it. It also allows you the ability to have your boxes shipped to a package receiving location, such as a Pac-n-Mail. This way you know that someone will be available to sign for it, and you can stop and pick it up at your leisure.
Once you enter all the required information along with billing information and login information to create your account, you are asked to confirm your order, and you are done! Simple, straight forward and easy!
Once your account is set up, you will notice cool features available – like your own Wine Cellar where you can keep a list of your favorite wines. From here you can also opt into receiving a personal wine consultation and someone will call you within one business day. You can also opt into a twice monthly email that will give you wine recommendations similar to the wines you have listed as your favorites!
What Wine Did I Receive?
The wines I received in this shipment were two red and two whites of the same kind – we used the 2Extra coupon available through our link. It would have been nice to get two different whites and reds, but since they have limited quantities every month, you get the same kinds if you opt for four bottles per shipment.
The red was a 2016 North Coast Pinot Noir from Willowbrook Cellars. The white was a 2016 California Chardonnay from Willowbrook Cellars as well.
The wines came in a typical shipping box with special wine separators to keep the bottles from clinking together and breaking.
It also came with a folder full of flyers and information, their Uncorked magazine, and a set of fun wine themed coasters.
How Did it Taste?
The 2016 North Coast Pinot Noir from was one of the best reds I have had, and I am not a huge red wine drinker. You can read all about your wines in their Uncorked Magazine. It laid out the aromas and flavors of this wine to help you identify the flavors in the wine. This red had layers of strawberry, plum and black pepper with a finish of Christmas spices, leather, and dark fruit. The wine was perfectly balanced acidity and fruitiness. It would have liked a touch of sweetness, but that’s just personal preference. Its flavors were complex and fruity, making it a great drinking wine. I also think it would be great for cooking with as well – like making sauces, putting in tomato sauce, stews, etc.
The 2016 California Chardonnay was in my top 5 favorite white wines. The aromas and flavors in this straw colored wine were hints of vanilla, pineapple, and nutmeg to start. When held i the mouth, the flavors then layer with rich sweet caramel, and then transitions to flavors of citrus, honey, and stone fruit. The wine finishes with a creaminess and flavors of butterscotch, hazelnut, and tropical fruit. It is the perfect glass of white wine to go with fish, salads, and other light-summery dishes. It would be a great chilled summer sipping wine and make delicious fruity sangrias.
Would I Drink it Again?
I would certainly drink both of these wines again, especially the Chardonnay. It had the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity and frutiness. You could tell why this wine was award-winning and had received 90 points for quality and taste. It was a wine I feel that most people would love to drink with dinner, enjoy on a warm summer night, or even be gifted a bottle. I would even reorder this bottle through their reorder option where the bottle would be 50% off the original price.
The Pinot Noir was great as well, and one of my favorite reds I’ve had, as I am not a huge red wine drinker. I would considering purchasing again in the future if I was having a dinner party or making a meal that would pair well with a red wine. For a red wine lover, I believe they would enjoy this red quite a lot.
Would I Recommend The California Wine Club?
I would recommend this club to anyone who wants to receive wine that is high quality, made in smaller batches, and supports local family owned wineries in California/the US. You can feel confident knowing that each bottle you receive is hand selected from the experts at The California Wine Club and will be of the utmost quality and has fantastic taste.
Even though the price point for a membership is a bit higher than some other options, the quality is worth the price for someone who is more than just a casual wine drinker or is looking to expand their palate.
