I Tried Home Chef’s Food and Recipes – Here’s What I Thought

Home Chef Review
Home Chef is all about bringing chef-inspired cuisine and skill into your home – and turning you into the ideal home chef. They use fresh ingredients, family-friendly recipes and even let you choose a plan based on your dietary concerns – so you can learn to cook what you want to cook.

As with most meal delivery kits, Home Chef comes at a price – and most of us don’t want to risk paying so much to be disappointed. That is why I personally ordered up a week’s worth of Home Chef meals (three meals), cooked them and criticized every aspect of their cuisines so that you could buy with confidence.

I received three recipes from Home Chef to try:

  1. Lamb Meatball Pita
  2. Patio BBQ Steak Sandwich
  3. Skinny Chicken Mozzarella

Let’s take a look, shall we?

1. Lamb Meatball Pita

I ordered this one because my husband’s interest was piqued when he saw lamb on the offerings. Lamb is definitely a twist on the classic hamburger meatball and lamb pitas just sounded so unique and refreshing for a summer dinner idea.

Prep didn’t take long. In fact, the longest part was just making the meatballs. You had to zest and chop here and there, but overall, prep was limited to about 10 minutes.

The recipe cards are well-written from Home Chef.

You get tips on what to do while you’re cooking – such as what steps you can complete while the meatballs are cooking. They also give you lots of pro tips during the cooking, so that you actually LEARN something.

Taste and Final Product

Each component on its own had excellent flavor and together, everything went together well, but after a few bites, you taste the heaviness of this meal. It was extremely rich (as lamb is), but eating an entire pita was just too much. Half, sure, but whole was way too much – and you can tell just by the fact that the calorie count on the card is 1,000 per serving!

Would I Eat It Again?

Probably not. While there was nothing blatantly wrong with the recipe, the richness and heaviness just turned me off from trying it again. Probably if they had not combined with a chickpea puree the dish would have been light enough to tolerate, but with all of the components, it was just too much.

2. Patio BBQ Steak Sandwich

This is the epitome of summer. Grilled steak sandwiches, grilled corn and a big sandwich. It’s simple, family-friendly, and could easily be done during the week. That was why I picked this recipe – I’m all about family-friendly, tasty and fast around here.

HomeChef_Steak Kit

This recipe doesn’t have as much prep as the others from Home Chef. In fact, it was fairly simple. I just had a few slices and chops to do, but it took me about five minutes to complete.

Most of this dish consisted of charring and grilling. You grill the bread, grill up the corn, grill the steaks, etc. The recipe teaches you how to make grill marks – which is always a bonus for those that want to cook to impress.

Taste and Final Product

Home Chef BBQ Steak Sandwich

My dish looked like the card, or at least close enough.

Taste was so-so. Components on their own did not offer much, but once everything was together, it tasted great. I really didn’t pick up any of the chili powder flavor on the steak and the only real “spice” was from the premade BBQ sauce Home Chef provided. You could taste the herb butter on the rolls and the corn though. The sandwiches were huge. I split a sandwich with my four-year old. You could have easily split each sandwich and corn in half and turned it from two to four servings because they were so hefty.

Would I Eat It Again?

Yes, I would eat it again. But, I’m not sure if I would pay for it again. It’s a sticky situation. The meal turned out fine, didn’t have any funky taste and overall, offered what it promised. But, after making it all up, I found that it was so simple, I don’t know if I could justify paying for it again. That could just be me though – because I’m sure others wouldn’t mind paying to have all of these ingredients curated for them.

3. Skinny Chicken Mozzarella

I love love love chicken mozzarella. It’s a main go-to at Italian restaurants – who could resist chicken smothered in sauce and cheese? Seriously? I was interested in this recipe because they went for a lighter side – and during the summer, I’m always looking for classics that can be made lighter. Even with the melted cheese, this dish comes in at 564 calories per serving.

Home Chef Skinny Chicken Ingredients

Out of the three recipes, this was the fastest to prep and cook. Prep consisted of just chopping a few ingredients – took less than five minutes.

This recipe was so easy to cook, anyone could do it. You bake chicken, saute up some greens and pour on the sauce – viola! The entire thing from prep to plate was about 30 minutes.

Taste and Final Product

Overall, this dish was very good. I especially enjoyed the crunch on the baked chicken. The sauce was spot-on and the greens had excellent flavor. You did not even miss the fact that there was no pasta in this dish. It was still very hearty and filling, and the portions (as usual) we're generous. I split this meal between two adults and one child and there was still leftovers for tomorrow.

Would I Eat this Again?

I most definitely would eat this recipe again. Well it seems simple the flavor was excellent and it was a unique twist to a classic high calorie Italian Dish. While I could have probably made it cheaper at home myself, I would have never thought to bake the chicken with a parmesan crust and get that flavor that Home Chef delivered. So yes, I would have repeated this dish.

Final Results: 2 out of 3 Recipes Approved

Overall, Home Chef created some excellent recipes. I would definitely approve and repeat two out of three of these recipes. Home Chef has the right ingredients and they do take their time create these recipe cards. I was impressed at how much they teach you while cooking, especially compared to other meal delivery kits that are not as generous on the teaching aspect.

While I would only repeat two of these recipes, it was a matter of one recipe just going overboard with ingredients and flavor. That being said, someone else might appreciate the robust hearty flavor and repeat that recipe.
