Coffee Selection: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

When you sign up for the club, you can choose between 20 different varieties of coffee, including light, medium and dark roast varieties as well as their specialty blend and espresso blends.

Coffee Selection Screen

If you pick a membership with multiple bags (which are one pound each), you can choose a different bag for each pound.

Camano Island Coffee Roasters is one of the only clubs out there to let you pick your grind -and they offer a very specific list of grinds. You can choose everything from percolator to French Press to whole bean and more – so that you have a grind perfect for your coffee brewing needs.

All of their coffees are organic, shade-grown and single origin as well as a few in-house crafted blends. They only purchase USDA Certified Organic beans and deal with only fair trade suppliers and vendors.

The Bad

Nothing. Camano Islands has an excellent array of coffees to choose from and considering the quality, it’s extremely impressive.

Coffee Bean Freshness: (Rating: 8/10)

The Good

Camano Island Coffee Roasters partners with Giving a Hand Up where they help farmers in Guatemala purchase farmland to grow coffee beans. They are very selective when it comes to where their beans are grown. When you receive your bag, it will be stamped on the sealed edge – showing you when it was roasted. If you order the pods, the coffee is ground and placed in the pods just before shipping – so it has not sat on the shelves long after being ground.

They are single origin and organic with a few special blends. All beans are shade-grown, which improves flavor and reduces acidity in the coffee.

Papua New Guinea Whole Bean

I personally tried the Papua New Guinea blend and it was delicious. You can definitely tell the difference between shade-grown and sun-filled coffee beans. Plus, it was refreshing to know that I was drinking 100 percent organic coffee – so no worries about pesticides in my morning java.

The Bad

Camano Islands promises to ship quickly, but they don’t specify how long in between roasting and shipping. While they don’t specify, all coffee is roasted and shipped fairly quickly to preserve flavor and freshness.

Camano Island Coffee

Camano Islands is one of the few coffee clubs to not send their coffee in a vacuum-sealed bag. While my coffee was still fresh, this type of packaging limits the shelf-life of the beans.

Coffee Quality and Taste: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

I really enjoyed the coffee from Camano Islands. Just like they state, their coffee has less acidity. I enjoyed the robust flavor of the coffee as well. It was delicious with no bitterness or gross aftertastes.

The aroma was invigorating and I loved the smell of their beans as I ground them. As it was brewing, it took over the room and the smell was amazing.

Camano Island Coffee Ground

This roast was listed as medium, but it had the flavors of a dark, nuttier roast.

The Bad

Nothing. I enjoyed their coffee to the last drop, literally. I’ve still been brewing leftover coffee from them to this day.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

Camano Island Coffee Roasters has a Recyclable Pod Club and a Bean Club. Both come with free shipping and the shipments go out once a month. You can choose between a four week duration (one month) or up to 10 weeks.

The Bean Club is broken up into three options: 2lb, 3lb, 4lb and you can pick a bag per pound (including choosing the grind and style). Prices start at $14.99 to $36.99 per shipment for introductory rates and then go to $34.99 to $56.99 per shipment or about $17.50 to $14.25 per pound.

The Recyclable Pod Club comes in three options: Small (32 pods), Medium (48 pods), and Large (64 pods). Prices are the same as the bean club, which breaks down to $0.89 to $1.09 per pod. For pods, they are slightly more than what you can buy elsewhere, but when you consider the quality of the coffee, it’s comparable.

The Bad

Nothing. Camano Island keeps it easy to find the membership that works for your taste and budget. Plus, they have some remarkably large bags for an excellent price.

Additional Club Perks: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

Camano Island Coffee Roasters does have a few member perks, including a referral program. Their Coffee Lover’s Club Referral Dollars gives you $20 in rewards for every successful referral to their company. It automatically applies to your next Coffee Lover’s shipment and those referral dollars don’t expire unless you cancel your account – so you can use them when you’re ready.

They also have a free bag of coffee promotion. You can receive their Papua New Guinea medium roast or Brazil Dark roast for free – but you will need to pay $4.95 shipping and handling. You will also be prompted to setup your club, but you can cancel at anytime – as long as it is within their cancellation timeframe.

The Bad

Nothing. This is an excellent perk and everyone loves rewards!

Shipping/Packaging: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

Beans are roasted and ground and shipped within just days. All packages are shipped via USPS. If you are on the Coffee Lover’s Club (for beans or pods), you get free shipping.

Shipping times take as long as one business day for Washington, Oregon and Idaho and as much as seven business days for the East coast.

If you need to, you can contact customer service to cancel or postpone your shipment, but you must do so within 48 hours of the shipment processing.

The Bad

Nothing. Camano Islands is impressive with their shipping and they work hard to ensure coffee is delivered as quickly as possible to customers.

Gift Memberships: (Rating: 7/10)

The Good

You can purchase a gift box, which comes with free shipping. They offer holiday boxes, special occasion boxes and just because options. When you pick the occasion, it will come with a handwritten note, chocolates (or other accessories) and your choice of coffees.

The Bad

Camano Island Coffee Roasters does not have a specific gift membership option. Instead, you would just sign up, but set the shipping address to the gift recipient.

Hopefully they add a gift certificate or better gift membership option later.

Website: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The website for Camano Island Coffee Roasters is quite impressive.

They have FAQs, shipping and privacy policies and their blog is excellent. It teaches you everything from the different types of beans to understanding organic growing and more. You can also access their Brew Guides, which includes guides specific on complex, easy and unique brewing methods.

Each of the guides then go further into the type of brewing system. For example, Complex Brewing would include guides on Chemex, Espresso and Aeropress. They also include guides on creating and using steamed milk for at-home espresso drinks.

The Bad

Nothing. I was very impressed with their website and the ease of navigation.

Customer Service: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

Camano Island Coffee Roasters is fairly accessible – especially compared to other coffee of the month clubs. You can reach them via their toll-free number Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm.

You can also email their customer care line and it takes up to 24 hours for a response – though I received mine in about two hours. You can always leave a message for customer service and they will contact you next business day.

They also have great buying guides, a self-explanatory website, and a FAQs section that answers just about every question.

The Bad

There is no chat with Camano Island Coffee Roasters, but this isn’t unusual. There are a few things that they don’t address on their website or make rather hard to find – so hopefully they can make their guides a little better organized in the future.

Who is This Coffee Club Best Suited For?

Camano Island Coffee Roasters can suit a lot of coffee tastes – including those that like those fun, unique blends. Because they are 100 percent organic and use shade-grown beans and focus on sustainability, they are also ideal for those that want their coffee habit to not impact the environment. While they are a little pricey, the price gives you organic, high-quality coffee – and a true coffee lover would more than understand that fact.

What We Like About Camano Island Coffee

Extreme Flexibility: Camano Island Coffee Roasters has one of the more flexible coffee club memberships. You select the duration, pick the coffees in your shipment and you can change it up whenever you want. There’s no commitment.

100% Organic Shade-Grown Coffee: I really like the fact that they offer 100% organic, shade-grown coffee. While you may not put a lot of thought into where your coffee is grown, you really should. Shade-grown coffee offers numerous benefits – including decreased acidity – which means you could enjoy coffee without any gastrointestinal issues. Also, the flavor is much more robust and less bitter – so those who say they hate the bitter aftertaste of coffee could be pleasantly surprised.

Recycle-Ready K-Cup Pods: I love the fact that their pods are recycle-ready and that they freshly ground the coffee and add it to the pods right before shipping – because who knows how long other k-cups sit around waiting for you to use.

What We Don't Like About Camano Island Coffee

Price May Be Too High For Some: If I had to pick one, it was just the price. But, in reality, when you are paying for fair trade, single origin, organic coffee, you are going to pay more – and with coffee, you really do get what you pay for.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Camano Island Coffee Roasters Club is quite impressive. They offer a variety of options for their club, extreme flexibility, and 100% organic, shade-grown coffees that are delicious and worth every penny.
