wine.com

Wine.com is all about the modern approach to wine clubs. They offer highly rated and award-winning wine selections to club members. While they do feature a higher per bottle rate, members get wines that they may not see in other clubs or local wine stores for that matter.
A wine club that operates like an online book club, but for wines.

PROS:
  • No contracts
  • 15% discount on future orders
  • Rare, highly rated wines
  • Can skip a shipment
  • Money back guarantee
CONS:
  • High per bottle rate
  • Difficult to find information online
  • Not as many benefits as other clubs
  • No champagne or sparkling wine

Wine Selection: (Rating: 9/10)

Wines selected for Wine.com’s members are picked by local critics and wine experts. Members do not get to pick red or white, instead they are given two bottles of that month’s selection. Champagne and sparkling wines are not included.

Wine Quality: (Rating: 10/10)

This club deals exclusively in award-winning and highly rated wines. In the 90-Point Rated club, members get ultra-premium wines. Small batch, boutique, limited production and rare wines are sent to members. International and U.S. wines are featured in the shipments.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 7/10)

The per bottle price for Wine.com is rather high – especially because shipping is not included. But, for the price, members get access to high quality, highly rated wines that they may never see in another clubs’ membership. Members can sign up for on-going as well as prepaid memberships. There are no contracts or cancellation fees, and they do offer a money back guarantee or refund for any wine that the member does not enjoy.

Wine.com does let you select a limited duration membership in three, six or 12-month memberships. Unfortunately you cannot do a one-time membership option with this club.

Additional Perks: (Rating: 6/10)

When it comes to additional benefits, this club does not have a lot. But, that is because they focus more on the wine, rather than additional benefits. Members do receive a 15% discount on reorders as well as tasting notes, collector’s notes, and a free subscription to the club’s newsletter as part of their membership package.

States: (Rating: 8/10)

Wine.com can only ship to states that allow the outside import of liquor. But, they also cannot ship to certain zip codes within allowed states, which include Alaska, Florida, Idaho and New Hampshire.

States they cannot ship to at all include AK, AL, AR, DE, GA, KS, KY, MD, ME, MS, MT, NC, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, UT, VT, WI.

Gift Memberships and Options: (Rating: 10/10)

Wine.com does offer great gifting options. You can gift a wine club membership and limit the duration at three, six and 12-months – so that you do not have to cancel your payment information at the end of the recipient’s term. They also have over 200 different gifts outside of the wine club so that you are not obligated to sign up for a club membership only. They include collections, single bottles and unique wine gifts.

You can also purchase gift cards from Wine.com ranging from $25 to $1,000 denominations. If you do order a wine gift, you can send a personalized card free of charge from Wine.com.

Website Features: (Rating: 7/10)

The website is easy to navigate, but some information is not readily available to prospective members. Shipping rates are not given and can vary per shipment, discount rates are found in the FAQs page rather than on the membership page, and finding information regarding what states they do and do not ship to takes time.

Customer Service/Support: (Rating: 10/10)

While the website is not as helpful as other clubs, the company does offer superior support to prospective and current members. From online chat to phone and email, members can contact someone with their questions with ease. Also, the company has questions and answers as well as an online “Ask a Question” section.

Wine.com has an A rating with the BBB, which we always feel is a positive. That means they do deliver on the promises they make to potential customers.

Who is This Wine Club Best Suited For?

Wine.com is very modern, but also very refined. While this club may work for someone new to online wine clubs, it most likely will only appeal to those with a refined wine taste – especially those entering into the 90-Point Rated club for collector’s-grade wines.

What We Like and What We Don’t Like

Wine.com does have many features that members will appreciate – including an online store for additional orders, 15% off discounts and access to great wines. But, shipping is not charged as a flat rate, which means depending on the size/weight of the bottle, monthly membership charges will actually fluctuate.

Their Discovery Tour membership is affordable and averages just under $15 per bottle, but the other two memberships have a pricier per-bottle rate that limits what type of club member can enjoy them. Also, you can only receive two bottles per membership order. While a member can reorder online, some members may want more than two bottles.

The club does feature collector’s wines that may not be seen anywhere else. They also have a high level of support and plenty of places to find answers. Overall, the club does a good job and mixing all tastes of wine, but with some of their limitations, it may not be the club for everyone.
