Virgin Wines specializes in small batch, boutique and handmade wines. These are finer quality than bulk wine producers and offer exceptional taste. The Wine Club is part of the Virgin Group and sticks to their core values of good value and great products. They only have one wine club membership to choose from, but to make it work, they offer deep discounts and introductory benefits.

Wine Selection: (Rating: 8/10)

Virgin tries to go the extra mile with their Explorer’s Wine Club. The wines come from small batch productions and are mostly handmade from family-owned vineyards. Because they don’t dabble in bulk-production, the wine selection sticks to finer brands. Members can choose from all reds, all whites or a mix. Champagne and sparkling wines are not included.

Wine Quality: (Rating: 6/10)

While they only deal with small batch and boutique style wines, which does not necessarily mean that they are the finest quality. The quality level is somewhat in between fine and value wine. But, they do offer a money back guarantee to ensure wine drinkers are satisfied.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 7/10)

There is only one membership level with this club, the Explorer’s Club. There are no contracts and no cancellation fees. The introductory rate features as astounding discount and three free bottles. But, after that, the price goes up to the regular with $19.99 shipping. Shipments are done quarterly with 12 bottles per shipment.

With Virgin Wines, you cannot select a single shipment nor can you limit the duration of your membership. So if you wish to cancel, you will need to call customer service and cancel it.

Additional Perks: (Rating: 7/10)

Members get access to exclusive discounts and coupon codes that are sent via email. There are no set discounts on extra bottles at this time.

States: (Rating: 10/10)

Virgin Wines only ships to states that allow wine imports. But, some states may not be able to receive the introductory offer depending on what state they live in. As of right now, they can ship to AZ, CA (offer may vary for California residents), CO, CT, FL, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ (offer may vary for NJ residents), NM, NV, NY, OH, OR (not eligible for free gift), SC, TX, VA, WA, WI, WV, WY, TN and DC.

Gift Memberships and Options: (Rating: 5/10)

Virgin Wines does not offer gift memberships at this time nor do they have any gift certificate options – something we hope to see them improve in the future.

They do offer wine gifts outside of their club membership, which include six, 12 or 16 bottle collections. There aren't any special messages, gift wrapping options, etc. though with these gifts.

Website Features: (Rating: 9/10)

The club’s site is easy to use and you can sign up for the club membership with ease. Their help guide doesn’t get as in-depth as other membership sites, but they do have plenty of tasting and wine note information.

Customer Service/Support: (Rating: 8/10)

Virgin Wine Club offers email support 24/7, phone support and an online help guide. They don’t have live chat at this time.

Explorer's Club: Introductory rate of $69.99 that includes 15 bottles. Tasting notes are included. After introductory rate, prices go up to $139.99 every three months for 12 bottles, plus $19.99 shipping.

Who is This Wine Club Best Suited For?

While Virgin Wines does try to create a wine club that suits all tastes, the wines they use are not as superior as other clubs. In order to offer the deep discounts they do, rare and vintage wines are not included in these shipments. Therefore, this club is good for the basic wine drinker or club member who likes variety and can use a case of wine every three months.

What We Like and What We Don't Like

Virgin Wines doesn’t require any lengthy contract periods and members can cancel at any time. This no-commitment approach is nice especially because they ship cases at a time. Their introductory rate is exceptional and members even get three extra bottles for signing up. But, after that, the price almost doubles and the company does charge a standard $19.99 shipping per case.
Shipments are done quarterly, which gives members plenty of time to enjoy their 12 bottles. The wines are not budget wines by any means, but they also do not include rare or vintage wines or 90+ rated wines that connoisseurs may expect. Therefore, this wine club is great for those who stick to the average, great bottle of wine and occasionally want something a little more stellar.

7.5 Total Score
A no-fuss, fun wine club to join.

Virgin Wines, part of the Virgin family of companies, offers a no-fuss wine club to customers. Their introductory rates are tempting and the wines they include divine. While they only offer one type of wine club membership, they do what they can to make it work for everyone.
