Laithwaites Wine Club

Laithwaite’s Wine Club consistently wins awards year after year for their excellence. They offer fine wines at a remarkably low per-bottle rate because they deal exclusively in case shipments for their members. Their introductory offers are more than tempting and their wine quality worth noting.

Great wine for those looking for memberships that deal exclusively in cases.

  • No contracts
  • Great discounts and introductory offers
  • Case shipments
  • Rare and vintage wines
  • No smartphone app for wine pairing and ordering
  • No membership or rewards program at this time
  • No champagne or sparkling wines included
  • Misleading pricing

Wine Selection: (Rating: 9/10)

Members can choose which wines they want in their case shipment. For the World Class Membership, they can choose between all reds, all whites or a mixture. The Reserve Club offers a mix or all reds. Wines are from around the world and include small production, vintage and boutique blends. Champagne and sparkling wines are not included in their membership. Members can choose what they like and don’t like before their case ships out so that they get a custom tailored membership order.

Wine Quality: (Rating: 9/10)

Laithwaite’s Wine Club has various brands, wineries and styles of wine. The Reserve Club focuses more on luxury, while the Wine Club focuses on affordability. Both still offer great-tasting wines and if a member is not satisfied, they can ask for their money back.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 7/10)

There are no contracts with Laithwaite’s Wine Club memberships. They do have great introductory offers, but the pricing can be misleading. The introductory offers include deep discounts, free shipping, and free bottles of wine for the Reserve Club. But, shipping is charged after the introductory offer at $19.99 per case. Billing and shipments are done every three months and members receive a case of 12 bottles per shipment.

Laithwaite's unfortunately does not offer any one time shipments nor can you limit the duration of your club membership – which may be an inconvenience for those that do not wish to have to call and cancel.

Additional Perks: (Rating: 4/10)

Tasting notes come standard in each shipment. But, that is all Laithwaite’s offers. There are no forums, no additional orders and no discounts for members.

States: (Rating: 8/10)

Laithwaite’s Wine Club makes it clear which states they will ship to and which they cannot. Their shipments are based on state laws.

Delivery is available to AZ, CA (offer may vary), CO, CT, FL, IA, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OR (not eligible for free gift), SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, WV, WY and DC. Because some states are not eligible for a free gift, it can also be misleading.

Gift Memberships and Options: (Rating: 0/10)

Laithwaite's does not offer any gift membership options, gift certificates, or even wine gifts. This is a huge disappointment and we hope to see that from them soon so that they can cater better to those shopping for gifts.

Website Features: (Rating: 6/10)

The website is very basic and gives users the information they need about each club. All of the terms and conditions, however, are in fine print at the bottom of the signup pages, which does not make it easy for a person signing up to see.

Customer Service/Support: (Rating: 8/10)

Laithwaite’s offers 24/7 email customer support and phone support. They do not have any live chat, but they do have an in-depth online guide.

Who is This Wine Club Best Suited For?

Laithwaite’s Wine Club takes a commitment; therefore, this wine club is best for those who have been in wine clubs and are willing to commit to a large quarterly price and an entire case of wine. They have two membership levels, allowing customers to pick between budget-friendly and higher quality. Therefore, the club does cater to various levels of wine drinkers. But, because they only ship out cases, this club is suited for those who have some experience with wine and can get through an entire case in three months.

What We Like and What We Don't Like

Laithwaite’s Wine Club keeps it simple with just two memberships and cases. By offering cases, they can give members cheaper per-bottle prices than clubs that ship only a few bottles. They do, however, have misleading introductory prices. While the introductory rate has deep discounts and free shipping, the prices do go up with the next shipment and shipping is then added on.

We like that they keep it simple and offer cases – which brings down the membership price. But, it is very limiting for those who do not want a case of 12 bottles every three months. They do allow members to customize their cases, so they can choose all whites, all reds or a mixture. They can also tell the club which wines they like and don’t like, so that they don’t get bottles they will not drink. The club offers a 100% money back guarantee if members receive a shipment they are not satisfied with.

One thing we don’t like is how misleading their offers are. While they are very upfront that it is introductory only, the regular prices, shipping charges and terms are all listed in fine print below the signup page and button – making it hard to find.

Overall, it is a good quality wine club with excellent per-bottle pricing and options. But, it may not work for everyone – especially those who are new to wine clubs.

6.4 Total Score
Great introductory offers and wines.

Laithwaite’s Wine Club includes amazing introductory offers and year-round lower per-bottle pricing because they take advantage of case shipments. There are just two memberships to choose from – each with their own perks.
