Cellars Wine Club

Choose from 9 different clubs starting at $39/shipment. Something for every taste and palate

Cellars Wine Club

Cellars Wine Club offers a wide variety of wine of the month clubs that are specifically designed to suit every taste, every preference and every budget. Their wines are handpicked by in-house wine experts and the club is devoted to wine education. Cellars Wine was originally founded in 1999 in Seattle as a small internet wine club. Today they have exploded into one of the largest wine of the month clubs with the biggest selection.

A wine club that offers numerous wine of the month club options to choose from to suit every taste.

Wine Selection: (Rating: 9/10)

When it comes to selection, Cellars Wine Club definitely does not have a shortage of choices. Not only are there nine different club types to choose from, but each has their own variety of wines. From West Coast wines to Sweet Wines and even a sparkling wine club, members can pick and choose the monthly club they want that suits their tastes. And, because there are no contracts, a member could enjoy one type of club for one or two months and then switch to a different variety to mix it up. Members can select all reds, all whites or a variety – depending on the type of club they sign up for.

Wine Quality: (Rating: 10/10)

Cellars Wine Club takes quality seriously. They have a panel of in-house wine experts that hand-pick each wine for each membership shipment. Their wines are highly rated and come from award winning vineyards around the world. There is also a 90+ and Premium club that feature some of the finest wines, limited production bottles and rare collectibles to enjoy.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 8/10)

The club itself has nine different membership options to choose from, ranging from $39 per month/per shipment to $130 per month. You can choose from memberships with a quarterly case or opt for one of the two bottle monthly shipments. You can also sign up to receive shipments monthly, every other month or quarterly as well. There are no contracts and no minimums, so members can swap clubs or simply cancel at any time without obligation. While they state they have a 100 percent guarantee, only unopened bottles can be returned and refunded in full. If a bottle is broken or damaged, however, members will receive a full refund or replacement bottle. Their price per bottle for their basic membership is comparable, but some of their other membership options are slightly higher per bottle than other clubs. That being said, members get a finer quality of wine – so it is a trade-off.

When you sign up, you can sign up for monthly, which is an ongoing membership. You cannot specify how many shipments you want and you will have to call and cancel your membership when you are ready – which can be an inconvenience for some buyers. Other clubs allow you to specify exactly how many shipments you want and the membership will end – unless you specify an ongoing relationship.

Additional Perks: (Rating: 6/10)

There are not a lot of perks with this club; instead, they focus on the wine. Each shipment comes with a monthly newsletter, referred to as “Cellar Notes” and it provides members with information about the wines themselves, the vineyard and even the region the wines come from. Tasting notes and recipes are not always included, but the company does have an online blog. Members cannot reorder wine at a discount; instead, they are limited to the club shipments only.

States: (Rating: 10/10)

Cellars Wine Club is very clear about which states they cannot ship to, which include AK, ND, HI, ME, NH, TX and UT. The other states that they can ship to are shipped for free – no added shipping charges.

Gift Memberships and Options: (Rating: 7/10)

The majority of club options from Cellars Wine Club are eligible for a gift membership too. Gifts ship free of charge and are delivered to the recipient’s door each month as specified. You can preselect how many shipments you want to give to your recipients – whether you want to sign them up for three months or a year. There is a three-month minimum for the club options, so you would not be able to sign them for a month only, but at least you can limit the duration. They can choose to continue on, but they will need to update the payment information in order to continue – your obligation and billing ends after the pre-selected duration.

They do not offer gift certificates so that your recipient could pick and choose their own wine club. Also, they don’t have individual wine gifts that are outside of the club membership. So, with Cellars, your only option is a wine club or nothing. Unfortunately this could be a turn off for some – especially those that do not want to commit a recipient to a membership or that want to order bottles or baskets separately.

Website Features: (Rating: 8/10)

The website is limited as to what they offer, but they do provide new and existing members plenty of information regarding each membership, their policies and even a FAQs section. The site is very easy to navigate and members can quickly sign up for a membership with ease. They also have a blog that includes wine tasting tips, decanting wine information, wine rating information and even advice regarding the types of wines.

Customer Service/Support: (Rating: 8/10)

Cellars Wine Club is still a locally owned operation in Washington. They have a toll-free number that is available Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm PST and an email customer service section. The limited customer service hours may be an issue for customers with concerns – especially if a shipment arrives broken on the weekend. But, most clubs have limited office hours to Monday through Friday; therefore, it does not necessarily make them stand out. Unlike other clubs, they have a reputation for taking every customer call seriously and their staff is very friendly and knowledgeable.

Who is This Wine Club Best Suited For?

Cellars Wine Club is suited for all wine drinker types. The club has numerous membership options to suit every budget and level of wine drinker. While they do not have a very basic membership, the wines are a good start for those that are new to wine drinking – after all, a poor quality wine can ruin a person’s experience with wine for good. Several of their membership options are limited to people in a certain budget or certain wine expertise – such as the sweet wines or 90+ membership.

Overall, the club does a good job at catering to just about everyone.

What We Like and What We Don’t Like

We really enjoy the fact that Cellars Wine Club has so many different options when it comes to memberships. This allows everyone to enjoy something and even more so, they can swap between clubs so that they get a full variety of wine club experiences without having to change clubs. We also love that they include shipping in their monthly membership, which makes them an affordable option – especially when other companies charge upwards of $20 or more to ship the wines.

Cellars does have a great rating with the BBB, which is always a plus in these types of clubs. They do pride themselves on offering what they say they are going to offer, fulfill orders and satisfy customers – so if you purchase from them, you can rest assured you will get what you expect.

Their per bottle price is still higher than other clubs, but they do deal with better quality wines than more budget-friendly clubs – so it is a trade off. We wish that they had more in-depth information for wine club members or other perks, but not all wine clubs offer this, so it does not necessarily make us not want to choose them.

Overall, we are very impressed with Cellars Wine Club because of their selection, pricing and upfront information.
