We may earn money or products (at no cost to you) from the companies mentioned in this post. However, we do not let any merchant influence our ratings - even though they might like to. ;-) Some of our top rated merchants we have no relationship with, other than we like their products! GreenGeeks is all about eco-friendly web hosting. They are one of the first (and possibly only) web hosts to be self-reliant and strive for energy efficiency at every turn. Originally founded in 2006, they have quickly become a web host of choice for businesses as well as private individuals. They originally started by offering shared web hosting, but have also branched out into WordPress and dedicated as well as VPS hosting for those that need more reliability and complexity from their web host.
- Affordable hosting
- Unlimited storage and data transfers
- 30-day money back guarantee
- Eco-friendly and environmentally sound company
- Only one WordPress hosting plan
- Newer company – unknown reliability
- No refund guarantees in their Service Level Agreement
GreenGeeks Scoring and Rating
Hosting Package: (Rating: 9/10)
All of the hosting plans offered by GreenGeeks are run on Linux and there are no Windows based hosting plans at this time. They do not support Windows hosting that would need the .Net or ASP support.
Currently their plans are categorized by shared web hosting, WordPress hosting, dedicated hosting, reseller hosting and VPS.
Their WordPress hosting is basically their lower level shared plan – but with a few added WordPress-specific features. With their VPS plans you get more flexibility and resources – and GreenGeeks is surprisingly affordable. With their dedicated hosting, which starts at $169 per month, you get an entire server with maximum performance and flexibility. Reseller accounts allow management of multiple cPanels and start at a low $19.95 per month.
GreenGeeks keeps their site and hosting options simple – which is refreshing. Unlike other hosts that offer a plethora of choices and useless options, GreenGeeks makes it easy to find the type of hosting plan you want, select it and get started. You aren’t navigating through hundreds of options just to find your hosting plan – and we appreciate that. We would like to see some Windows-based hosting options in the future, but it is not uncommon for a company to rely on Linux-based hosting for their core products.
Features/Functionality: (Rating: 9/10)
GreenGeeks does offer a fair deal of functions for free, including their website builders, email, unlimited web space and data transfers, 99.9% uptime guarantee, enhanced security and service, free website migration, blazing fast SSD RAID-10 storage, free domain name registration or transfer, one-click installs, cPanel, nightly backups and more.
The features you receive will depend on the type of hosting package you sign up for – for example not all VPS features roll over to shared or reseller plans.
Security: (Rating: 9/10)
GreenGeeks uses real-time security scans on all plans to scan, locate and block all known hazards and protect sites hosted on their servers. They also have DDoS protections in place. One thing that offers added peace of mind and security is the fact that GreenGeeks will not host pornography sites – and those types of hosts are at higher risk for security breaches.
WordPress: (Rating: 9/10)
There is WordPress hosting offered at GreenGeeks. They strive to give WordPress users better hosting solutions, reliability, security and performance. All of their WordPress plans come with automatic updates and account isolation – so you aren’t sharing information with other users on the same server.
With a WordPress plan you can get access to content delivery networks, optimized http and MySQL databases, built-in PHP caching, daily backups, WordPress site transfers for free, one-click installations and more. They also offer unlimited data transfer and web space for their WordPress plans.
No themes or specialty plug-ins included – you’ll have to get those on your own.
Usability/Ease of Use: (Rating: 10/10)
All GreenGeeks plans come with the latest version of cPanel, which is something everyone can use easily and find information on. So, if you are not new to web design, then cPanel through Green Geeks will be quick and easy to figure out. Even if you are new, all of the tutorials and help guides offered by GreenGeeks will quickly familiarize you with cPanel and you’ll be a pro in no time. Overall, it is extremely easy to use.
Reliability: (Rating: 8/10)
GreenGeeks currently offers a 99.9% uptime guarantee – which is about standard in the industry. They do back it by a Service Level Agreement and it applies to all of their plans. However, they don’t publish actual statistics on their website, so it is hard to see how often they fall away from that 99.9% uptime. They also do not state how they will rectify any downtime – so their Service Level Agreement could use some clarification and reworking. Most companies will offer a credit for every hour of downtime, but GreenGeeks doesn’t tie themselves up with any such promises – and that can be concerning.
Their data center is located in Illinois. They use Supermicro rack-mountable servers using the latest power efficient technology and Intel quad-core processors. They are monitored 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and everything is backed up nightly. They also have on-site security and staff 24/7.
Help and Support: (Rating: 9/10)
GreenGeeks does have 24/7/365 support available to all of their customers, and technicians are spread throughout the United States. All technicians are directly employed by GreenGeeks – so you are not dealing with a third party. They have support teams employed in Toronto, Chicago and Los Angeles to meet time constraints. Phone support is available, but not 24/7 like email, help desk and chat.
Their help center boasts numerous guides and how-to information. They have a knowledgebase that is extensive and a blog that discusses the latest updates, tips and know-how for those new to hosting. They also have an Education Center, which provides regular articles. They also have an active social media presence where you can go to get server updates or even ask questions.

What we Like About GreenGeeks
Eco-Friendly: It is nice to see a company conscious about their impact on the planet. While a lot of companies out there say they’re going “green,” it is literally in GreenGeeks business plan to be environmentally friendly.
WordPress Hosting: We like that they have a lot of WordPress-centric features. Most companies that offer WordPress hosting regurgitate the features and plans for cloud, shared or VPS without adding anything specific to WordPress.
30 Day Money Back Guarantee: You can try GreenGeeks risk-free for 30 days. If you don’t like them, you can request your money back. They are notorious for honoring this and making it easy – because they want customers satisfied even if they leave.
No Hidden Fees: Setup fees are non-existent and they don’t slam you with outrageous add-on fees afterwards. It is refreshing to have upfront pricing and even free domain registrations – which surprisingly not all companies offer.

What we Don't Like About GreenGeeks
Could Use More WordPress: While they are WordPress friendly, they could use a few more WordPress options. Right now it is just their shared plan. Hopefully they can add a few more options or even a VPS option for WordPress users – especially those that have a more established site and need more visitors.
SLA Issues: While it is great they guarantee up to 99.9%, their service level agreement doesn’t specify what they will do if they cannot keep the sites up. This is something they need to correct because gaps in service level agreements can be considered a red flag.

Who Is This Web Hosting Company Best For
GreenGeeks is better suited for companies that want a versatile host. Meaning, someone they can jump around from plan to plan as their website needs grow. Unlike other providers, GreenGeeks offers excellent pricing and just the right balance of plans per category so that a website could start out on a shared server and then move their way to VPS or even dedicated.
GreenGeeks is all about affordable hosting and environmentally conscious operations. They're reliable, affordable and offer a variety of hosting packages and services to suit just about any need.
