Web Conferencing

Mikogo was launched in early 2004 as free screen-sharing software. It has since expanded, providing free software for private use and paid plans for businesses. The free version supports meetings with three attendees for private customers, while the paid versions allow up to 25 participants for businesses. Mikogo’s Team and Enterprise plan support unlimited hosts, an unusual and desirable web conferencing feature.

Best suited for those needing simple audio conferencing.

PROS:
  • Easy-to-use interface with informative pop-ups
  • No download for attendees
  • Share specific applications or entire screen
  • Cost-effective plan for unlimited hosts
  • Monthly or one-time fee pricing scheme
  • Free teleconferencing numbers
  • Ability to have multiple presenters
  • Free screen sharing app (also available on iOS and Android)
  • Branding options
  • Available in 30+ languages
CONS:
  • Mikogo interface hidden in screen-sharing mode
  • 25 participant max
  • Invitations redirect to email
  • Automatic screen sharing mode
  • No webcam support

Meeting Setup: (Rating: 8/10)

Mikogo is browser-based for attendees, but hosts have to prepare with a download. Additionally, invitations are not integrated. While it is free and fairly simple, the meeting setup can be complicated – especially when you compare it to other services out there that are also free.

Features: (Rating: 8/10)

There are a good deal of features that come with Mikogo. First, there are no downloads for attendees, which means they can join the meeting that much faster. There is also a cross-platform support and up to 25 meeting participants can be present. Presenters can hand off leadership and the entire system can be controlled remotely. Also, they offer a plethora of mobile apps for almost any mobile operating system. There is a session scheduler as well and you can enjoy screen sharing and whiteboard features too.

Video: (Rating:  0/10)

Mikogo does not have webcam support, however it does provide a great opportunity for sharing onscreen images, videos, and applications.  It remains to be seen whether they will add webcam usage as a  standard feature in the future.

Audio: (Rating: 10/10)

Mikogo features crystal clear call quality. Users can also record their sessions to review later. With their built-in VoIP and free teleconference numbers in over 28 countries, it is easy to connect to audio.

Security: (Rating: 10/10)

256-bit AES Encryption and access only for invited participants earn Mikogo a high security rating.

Ease of Use: (Rating: 8/10)

A user-friendly, intuitive interface lends itself to productive meetings. Just watch out for screen sharing mode, which hides the Mikogo interface. Also, hosts need to turn off the automatic screen sharing mode to avoid accidental overshare. These minor hiccups can make it difficult for new users to properly conduct a meeting – and sometimes could accidentally prove to be embarrassing. Hopefully they improve their functionality in the future so that this doesn't happen.

Help and Support: (Rating: 6/10)

Mikogo has an in-depth knowledgebase, getting started guide and plenty of tutorials so that new users get the support they need. If your question isn't answered through these resources, you can submit a support ticket via their email system. Chat is not available for support; instead, it is for sales. Also, phone support is not available for tech support – only sales.

What we Like About Mikogo

Unlimited Hosts: This is an incredible deal, since most web conferencing platforms charge per-host. Mikogo’s pricing plans all include unlimited hosts. If you want several company members to be able to host meetings, or switch between presenters, Mikogo may be the best choice for you.

User-Friendly Interface: With its simple, hassle-free interface, it doesn’t take much time to get up and going with Mikogo. The interface is clearly organized and it is easy for users to find what they need.

No Download for Attendees: No download requirements for attendees means more times for meetings and less time for setup. Be sure that hosts download the software in advance to streamline the process further.

Mobile Apps:  Mobile apps allow attendees to participate in the meeting from their iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.  They, too can view the host, or presenter's, screen in real time.

Specific Application Sharing: Share specific applications only to avoid letting coworkers see your whole screen. This allows you to get work done without compromising your privacy.

Flexible Pricing: Mikogo business plans start at just $13 per month, a real steal. Even the enterprise-level plans are comparatively cheap. This puts web conferencing (with multiple hosts, no less) within the reach of any small business.

Free Teleconferencing Numbers: Free teleconferencing numbers allow users to call in for free on a conventional landline. This comes in handy with customers who prefer to use conventional telephone connections. Everyone loves an accommodating host!

Branding Options: Brand your meeting interface with company colors and logos to make a professional impression. This feature is not standard with web conferencing, software, so take advantage of it.

What we Don't Like About Mikogo

Automatic Screen Sharing Mode: Mikogo automatically goes into full computer screen sharing mode for the host, which has to manually be turned off. This was a creepy shock during testing. The first time you host, be sure to turn this off so you aren’t accidentally sharing your screen with the entire meeting.

Fussy Screen Sharing Mode: Not only is screen sharing mode automatically tuned on, it also hides the interface for the attendees. This makes it difficult for attendees to use Mikogo features while in screen sharing mode.

No Webcam Support: Mikogo is an audio and screen-sharing app only. Without webcam support, Mikogo can’t compete as a full-fledged web conferencing service. However, for customers who never intend to use webcams, this may not be an issue.

25 Participant Max: Mikogo’s 25-participant maximum makes it impossible to hold large webinars or training sessions using the service. Midsize or large business may run into problems with this threshold.

Invitations Redirect to Email: This is a common blunder for web conferencing platforms. Invitations have to be manually sent via email. While this is a small setback, it would be much nicer if users could send invitations via Mikogo itself and not another application.

7.5 Total Score
No Video

Mikogo is very well-suited to small businesses that don’t need webcam support. If you need multiple hosts and don’t want to pay individual host licenses, Mikogo is perfect for you. The service works – and the price is right.
