Web Conferencing on Your Smartwatch

GoToMeeting launched a new app that allows users control over meetings directly from their Android smartwatch. You can now join, leave, or mute/unmute a meeting by pressing a button on your wrist. Of course, GoToMeeting users shouldn’t toss aside their laptops and smartphones. The company expects users to continue conducting the majority of their business from computers and phones. However, a smartwatch lends more freedom to web conferencing, enabling people to look over their notes or work without needing to tab over to GoToMeeting.
How to Put GoToMeeting on a Smartwatch
GoToMeeting has an official app in the Google Play store. Simply download it to your Android phone to get started, in addition to putting the Android Wear companion app on your smart watch. Citrix, the company behind GoToMeeting, also maintains an official iOS app. It’s safe to assume that when Apple smart watches are released in early 2015, the company will update it to include support for the new devices.
Reviews on Using GoToMeeting on Smartwatches
The idea of holding a meeting directly from one’s watch is enticing… and seemingly unrealistic. So what are real users saying about this new capability?
“I can’t figure out how it works.” Many people report problems with their smart watches not recognizing the GoToMeeting app. Hopefully kinks like this will be worked out in time. Right now, the app is barely a month old.
“It’s not relevant to me.” Hosting a GoToMeeting on an Android smartwatch is a very niche thing to do, so it’s not something that millions of people jump for joy over. In addition, the app is currently limited to starting/joining, stopping/leaving, and controlling the volume of a meeting. The development team says they plan to add video and sound in the future, although smartwatch users are skeptical of how long their battery will last on a full meeting.
GoToMeeting: Breaking New Ground
GoToMeeting is the first web conferencing company to join Android Wear. Although their first step into the smartwatch world is a shaky one, it’s bold and speaks well of the company. Small and large businesses alike can benefit from having an innovative web conferencing company as their go-to.
