What Is The Paleo Diet?

What is the Paleo Diet? It's just meat and vegetables, right? Wrong.
The paleo diet is a mythical creature. People assume they understand the concept – after all, it is just meat and vegetables, right? Wrong. You would be surprised at how many misconceptions about Paleo you have already played into – and some of them could be detrimental to your overall health. If you want to go Paleo, we suggest getting to know what it means to be on that diet; and doing what you can to make sure you do it right.

What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo diet has literally been around for years (as in, since the start of man). But, it wasn’t until 2002 that someone popularized the caveman diet by giving it a trendy fixed up name and a fashion boost. While they use the word “diet” behind it, Paleo is more of a lifestyle. You are eating to improve your health and overall well-being, while minimizing the risks of chronic diseases associated with the Western world.

Processed foods are a big reason the Paleo diet has increased in popularity. People were accounting for more than 60 percent of their grocery purchases toward processed food. Antibiotics, dyes, artificial flavorings, excess sodium, etc. all were entering diets. In theory, those that back Paleo state these ingredients are what age people and make them sick.

The goal of Paleo is simple: replace packaged goods with whole, fresh and nutrient-rich foods.

So What Does One Eat on Paleo?

Here’s the thing: it’s called the “caveman” diet for a reason. While you don’t need a club or spear to catch tonight’s dinner, you do need to consider what a caveman would have had access to and use that as your guide. There are certain products that are still Paleo-approved even though cavemen didn’t use them, like avocado oil, olive oil and even walnut oils. These closely emulate the oils of the first men; therefore, they are acceptable.

On Paleo, there are a few things you can safely consume, like:

  • Fresh Meat (preferably grass-fed)
  • Fresh Fish
  • Free Range Eggs
  • Fresh Seafood
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Healthy Oils (Coconut, Avocado, Walnut, Grapeseed, Olive, etc.)

There are also foods you cannot eat, including:

  • Refined Grains
  • Refined Sugars
  • Processed Meats
  • Foods with Salt
  • Potatoes
  • Corn
  • Dairy
  • Legumes
  • Alcohol
  • Coffee
  • Refined Vegetable Oils
  • Peanuts or Peanut Butter

Is Paleo Worth It?

Paleo is arguably one of the most difficult diets to follow – especially when you consider you have to cut out your morning coffee and creamer to boot. Though, most Paleo followers readily admit that they don’t skip their coffee – can you blame them?

With Paleo, you need to be diligent and count your foods and nutrients carefully. You could accidentally hit dangerous levels of calcium and vitamin D deficiency, especially when you cut out milk and fortified foods.

Make Going Paleo Easier – Get a Meal Kit Delivery Service that Offers Paleo-Friendly Recipes

Finding the right balance of flavors and a complete meal is not easy. But, with a meal kit delivery service you have chef-created recipes that feature fresh ingredients, high-quality meats (some with 100% USDA organic cuts) and calories and nutritional balances that meet the needs of the Paleo diet.

If you are going Paleo or you are already doing the Paleo lifestyle, we recommend checking out Sun Basket, Green Chef or Home Chef for your next week of meals.

We personally tested all three – and even received Paleo recipes from each one of those kits – to determine how great they are for the Paleo lifestyle. They tasted great, turned out excellently and we were pleasantly surprised at how much flavor you could get without any processed ingredients.
