Sun Basket vs. Terra’s Kitchen: Which is the Better Meal Kit Delivery Service?

Sun Basket vs. Terra's Kitchen - Which is best?
Find out Who came out on Top in our Actual Testing?
Meal kit delivery services are certainly popping up just about everywhere you turn these days. While you probably know about the big names out there, how much have you heard of Sun Basket or Terra’s Kitchen?

Today we’re going to take an in-depth look and compare Sun Basket vs. Terra’s Kitchen to see which kit is better for you.

How Much Do They Cost?

Cost is a big factor for meal kit services. We all have budgets and when it comes to food for the week, you don’t want to go broke. While cost is a factor for all of us (whether we want to admit it or not), you have to also think about what you are getting for the price. There are plenty of meal kits out there with affordable rates, but then the recipes and quality of ingredients suffer.

If we are just comparing cost, here is how it breaks down for these two services:

  • Terra’s Kitchen: You can start as low as two servings and move up to as many as four per meal. Instead of flat rates, meals range from $9.99 to $17.99 per serving.
  • Sun Basket: They have several menu options, but they all start at $68.94 per week for two people and three meals — or about $11.49 per serving. They do charge $5.99 shipping after your second order.
  • Winner: If you are basing it solely on price, Sun Basket’s pricing is easier to understand and for the most part, they are more affordable. While Terra’s Kitchen does have some meals that drop as low as $9.99 per serving, most of the recipes you will find yourself drawn to are $12 and higher.

    How’s the Packaging?

Both companies have very impressive packaging. Of course, Terra’s Kitchen may take the cake here.

Terra’s Kitchen has free shipping and that is even more impressive when you see the vessel that all of your food comes in. This vessel has ice packs on each tray — which in turn, offers cooling from the sides, tops and bottoms.

Everything is so neatly organized and sealed it is amazing. Three days after receiving my vessel (which was two days after it shipped or five days total), the inside was still below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sun Basket doesn’t have a flashy vessel, but they still package their products impressively. They use a compost-ready liner inside their box and they are all about recycling everything you receive from them. They use plastics and even paper bags to separate ingredients/recipes so that you can toss them in the recycle. All of their plastic containers can be rinsed and also recycled. When it comes to keeping things cool and organized, they also do an excellent job.

Nothing leaks (and meats are double-bagged just in case), everything was extremely cold upon arrival, and everything packaged so that it arrives as fresh as possible.

Winner: Terra’s Kitchen still wins here. Their shipping is free and their vessels are the epitome of eco-friendly. They can be reused up to 100 times before being replaced! When you factor in the fact you get these innovative vessels along with free shipping, you can’t help but give them the win.

Not to mention, out of all of the companies we tested, Terra’s Kitchen was the only that kept everything exceptionally cold — and could have easily kept items cold for an additional three days!

Are the Recipes Easy to Make?

Recipe-wise, Sun Basket’s were slightly more complex, but the result was a unique final dish with amazing flavors. You can read about the three recipes I tried from them in our taste test blog. They combine flavors you would never expect, and they turn out excellently.

Terra’s Kitchen recipes were much easier to prepare (see my taste test results). Most of the prep work was done for you. For example, I needed sweet potato chunks. The sweet potatoes arrived already peeled and cut into spears — so I just had to dice. Pico de gallo was already done too.

There were very few ingredients to add to Terra’s Kitchen, and yet the dishes were extremely flavorful and satisfying. I was impressed by a few of their combinations too.

Winner: If you’re going for ease, then Terra’s Kitchen probably would take the win. They are very simple to prepare.

If you want something that is more complex, but still easy enough to create, then I would give it to Sun Basket.

What About Food Quality and Ingredients?

When you look at Sun Basket vs. Terra’s Kitchen, quality and ingredient freshness is honestly the same. Both companies focus on the farm-to-table concept. That means they source their products from local farmers and deliver ingredients to your door that are fresher than what you would find in-store.

Winner: Tie. They both deliver farm-fresh ingredients that are sourced from handpicked suppliers. They both focus on organic, sustainability and reducing their impact on the environment.

    Do They Accommodate Special Diets?

Special diet concerns are something all meal kit services should address. Whether you need a gluten-free diet, want vegetarian or you are living the vegan lifestyle, you’d be surprised at how many choices are out there these days.

Sun Basket has plans specifically designed for dietary concerns. They offer a Paleo Plan, Gluten-Free Plan and Vegetarian Plan. They don’t accommodate dairy-free or Vegan diets at this time, but it is still impressive what they have. I personally tried a vegetarian and gluten-free dish from them and they were spectacular.

Terra’s Kitchen does have gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and Paleo meals, but they don’t have plans specifically for those dietary concerns. Instead, you would choose from the large array of dishes and find one that suits your preference. There may be some weeks, however, that you don’t have as many selections or they are repeated. This is one pitfall to their system.

Winner: In terms of consistency, I would have to give this one to Sun Basket. They have plans for these dietary concerns, which means you’re guaranteed to get a new recipe to try each week. While with Terra’s Kitchen, that isn’t guaranteed.

What Types of Meals are Out There?

There is plenty of variety with both of these services — always a bonus when you’re paying so much for meal kits in the first place.

Terra’s Kitchen has a few seasonal and annual favorites that stick around. The good news here though is if you enjoy one of them, you can repeat it. They also have meals that rotate each week. Just some recipes you could expect from Terra’s Kitchen include:

  • Spicy Honey Lime Chicken with Edamame Rice
  • Turkey Taco Bowl (Gluten-Free)
  • Tilapia Salad with Arugula and Apples (Gluten-Free)
  • Vegetarian Rainbow Kabobs (Vegetarian)
  • Cheesesteak Sliders
  • Bacon, Kale and Caramelized Onion Pasta (Low Calorie)
  • Sun Basket rotates their menu and works hard to never repeat. So, you will most likely get more variety with Sun Basket than Terra’s Kitchen. A few recipes you could expect to find when picking your own menu include:

  • Yemeni Grilled Shrimp with Fattoush Salad (Low Calorie)
  • Chicken with Green Olives, Capers and Lemon (Paleo, Gluten-Free)
  • Sweet Potato Fritters with Nectarine Masala Chutney (Vegetarian, Soy-Free)
  • Kale and Black Bean Tacos with Roasted Red Pepper Salsa (Gluten-Free, Vegetarian)
  • Coconut Crusted Trout with Smashed Cucumbers and Mint (Gluten-Free, Paleo, Dairy-Free)
  • Winner: Companies have an equally impressive menu. They each had a special diet concerns, but also give you a good variety of choices. So when you have three meals to choose, you will find that it is very easy to use. In this one, I will have to say it is a tie.

Conclusion: Who Wins in Sun Basket vs. Terra’s Kitchen?

In all honesty, both of these meal kit delivery services are excellent — that is why they are top-rated on Revuezzle.com. Each have excellent offerings, unique and eco-friendly packaging, and they take their food seriously. They aren’t just delivering run-of-the-mill recipes. Instead, the combine flavors you wouldn’t think of and even make it exciting to try gluten-free, vegan and Paleo recipes — even if you don’t need them.

Each has their qualities, and only you can decide which is best for you. It may come down to price, having more selection or just wanting to try out a cool looking shipping vessel. Luckily, both are inexpensive to try out for the first time. My recommendation? Go for both — then decide!
