PROS:
  • Detailed Coffee Selection
  • Freshness that can’t be beaten
  • Free Shipping
  • Single-origin coffees
CONS:
  • No customer support phone line
  • Plain Gift membership/offerings

Coffee Selection: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

Moustache Coffee Club focuses solely on the details. Growing elevation, region, and when the coffee is in season are all variables the folks at Moustache keep track of. For instance, one of their products out of Colombia named La Plata grows at an elevation of 1500-1900m. It has a beckoning aroma of chocolate while tasting like vanilla, caramel, and crisp white grape, and you can only get it from April-July.

Or take Coopetarrazu from Costa Rica, which grows at 1700m and tastes like milk chocolate with a delicious creamy consistency.

The Bad

Despite having a vast selection of coffee there were no decaf options available, which comes as a minor hit to an otherwise fantastic variety of coffee. If we are going to get picky, they also don’t have single-serve varieties. I know some of you coffee fanatics are scoffing at that, but hey, thousands of people do have single-serve machines — so it needs to be noted that you only get beans or grounds here.

Coffee Bean Freshness: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The reason the founders started Moustache Coffee Club was because they were sick of paying for premium coffee only to receive stale, two week old coffee in the mail afterward.

To combat this, they roast and ship on the same day, which is unheard of in the online coffee club world. They do this to ensure the coffee meets their customers within 3 days of the roast date, unlike other coffee clubs. That’s not all.

They know which coffee types are out of season, and they ship only those that are in season to their members. Since they roast and ship on the same day, they receive a perfect score in this section.

The Bad

Nothing. Moustache Coffee Club is the epitome of freshness. Their coffee even tells you the right time to drink and they always ship the coffees at optimum taste level.

Coffee Quality and Taste: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

Overall, the coffee from Moustache Coffee Club was impressive.
moustache-coffee-brewed

Now, I’m not a big fan of washed coffee, but I’m not going to lower Moustache’s score for sending me washed beans. Washed beans are indicative of high-quality, gourmet coffee procurement. Meaning, Moustache Coffee Club delivers exactly what they promise: “coffee for the discerning individual.”

The coffee itself had great flavor and was exceptional in quality. You can tell just how fresh it was — and yes, I focused on the date they suggested.

The Bad

Nothing. While I’m not a fan of washed coffee, I’m not holding Moustache to that — after all, they are a club for discerning coffee drinkers.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

The club has three different plans titled the duet, solo artist, and lip syncer.

Each plan ships one 12 oz. bag for $19.99; the only difference is that the duet ships every week, the solo artist every two weeks, and the lip syncer every month. There’s no obligation and members are able to cancel at anytime, so Moustache maintains fairness with their members.

If you’re worried about commitment, there’s no reason to have a panic attack. With Moustache Coffee Club, you can order up a free trial and they’ll send you over a tasting bag to try out — no credit card charges, no shipping and you can cancel after the trial if you decide it’s not for you.

The Bad

I prefer clubs that send you smaller samples. Only reason is what if you don’t like that large bag? Then you’re out of luck.

Additional Club Perks: (Rating: 5/10)

The Good

You can access their education section for insider tips on how to brew coffee properly — always a bonus.

The Bad

Moustache doesn’t have any perks that stand out from other coffee clubs. Yes, they have a blog and you do get some information about coffee from there, but perk-wise, Moustache is lacking.

Shipping/Packaging: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

moustache-box-exterior

Moustache is quite dynamic in the area of shipping. First off, shipping is free to all members, and second, the beans arrive in a neat box (clearly labeled). When you open it, it feels like Christmas. You are presented with a bag of beans and some reading materials.

moustache-inital-open

These aren’t your ordinary bags though. They are designed for one purpose: shielding the beans from light and keeping them fresh.

moustache-coffee-sample-bag

If you look at the bag, you will see all of the details Moustache is known for. They include everything from the company that acquired the beans to the roaster to the elevation the beans were grown at. Lastly, they’ve incorporated a “Start Drinking On” date on the package that works like the opposite of an expiration date. Quick, fun, and useful, Moustache hits shipping out of the park.

The Bad

Nothing. Moustache is great here. They take time to package their beans so they are protected from light and air — a bonus.

Gift Memberships: (Rating: 8/10)

The Good

The gift membership is quite simple. Select the plan, how long the membership lasts, compose a personal message, and then select a delivery date. After that’s done, leave the rest to Moustache to deliver some incredible coffee for that special someone!

The Bad

Other clubs have more to offer in the realm of gift memberships such as mugs and baskets, so Moustache doesn’t receive a higher score in this section.

Website: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The website is gorgeous. The landing page showcases a stunning black and white video showing coffee being filtered, presented, and consumed. The language of the site is top notch as well. Instead of feeling robotic, Moustache Coffee Club has a voice that’s funny, informative, and genuine jumping from the page.

Along with that is a whole section dedicated to educating customers about different ways to brew. My personal brewing favorite is the Aeropress method, which uses a contraption to seemingly squeeze every last bit of flavor from the beans—I’ll let you check it out for yourself.

At the bottom of the page is a very scientific guideline for fixing coffee that’s either too bitter or too acidic. Utilizing temperature changes, weight fluctuations, and timing, Moustache Coffee Club can show you how to fix the taste of your coffee.

Overall, Moustache has an amazing site that’s just as informative as it is beautiful.

The Bad

No complaints. The website worked well, was easy to navigate, and had plenty of material to review.

Customer Service: (Rating: 2/10)

The Good

Moustache doesn’t have a dedicated phone line, but they do have a place to leave a message along with an email address for those needing more information. Moustache is also on social media with a Twitter and Facebook page for those who would like to send them a direct message. The use of a live agent was absent from the website.

The Good

When we reached out to Moustache Coffee Club, they were unresponsive via email. Then, we attempted to contact them on social media. Again, no response. Unfortunately, we feel this reflects their customer service as a whole — and I’m personally worried about how they would respond to customers with an issue. Since they don’t have a phone number for contact, and they don’t respond to email or social media, how is a person to get a response?

Their coffee is fine, but their lack of customer service means that if you ever had an issue, we cannot guarantee they’ll ever respond or work to make it right.

FAQ's

Who is This Coffee Club Best Suited For?

Moustache Coffee Club is definitely not for those who like the garden-variety coffees. Instead, it is for those that want to branch out, explore coffee flavors and take a sipping tour around the globe. As long as you’re not picky — and open to trying new coffees — you’ll love what Moustache has to offer.

What We Like About Moustache Coffee Club

Unique Branding: The style, wit, and quality of Moustache Coffee Club is outmatched. These people know coffee, and they want to share their knowledge and amazing offerings with their customers.

Exotic, Gourmet Coffees: We love that they branch out with their coffees. They don’t just get run-of-the-mill coffee you can find anywhere. Most of these coffees are so exclusive, it would be impossible to order them elsewhere.

Force You to Explore: They also expose you to the different types of coffee that are out there — and I guarantee there will be some that you didn’t know existed.

What We Don't Like About Moustache Coffee Club

Poor Customer Service Response: Our only wish is that they would give their customers more ways to contact them. An email and a message box aren’t exactly the most diverse set of methods. Also, we wish that their gift membership were a little more personalized. We really do not like their lack of response via customer service. It was extremely disappointing.

No Sampler Kits: It would be nice if Moustache would have a tasting or sampler kit as a subscription option. When people join clubs, they seek maximum exposure to coffees — and one large bag locks them into a bag of coffee they may not actually enjoy.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts
Overall, Moustache delivers on what they promise. Their coffees are definitely for the discerning coffee drinker ready to explore the world. We just wish their customer service was as dedicated as their coffee curators. If they could improve customer service, they would have an excellent product ready for just about any club shopper.
