iGourmet is the first coffee club that’s part of a bigger online retailer. This certainly comes with its advantages. They sell a variety of products on their site, and they’re seasoned in providing great food and beverages to a multitude of people. Since they’re a bigger operation, you can count on a dependable product every time. Their selection, which includes teas and hot chocolate, is flawless. Their website is easy to navigate, and it’s clear that customers are dealing with a big online retailer, which is impressive.

iGourmet is a large online retailer that has an impressive supply of coffees, teas, and other gourmet food offerings.

PROS:
  • Vast selection of coffees
  • Organized Website
  • Strong Customer Service Page
  • Great Gift Membership Basket
CONS:
  • Bean Freshness is lacking
  • Not as dynamic of a coffee club as we hoped

Coffee Selection: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The coffee selection is stunning. They have decaf, tea, organic coffee, hot chocolate, and even juices. The site also makes it incredibly simple to choose coffee from a specific region, brand, or roast.

Try the Yemen Mocha Matari coffee, which has an earthy, fruity taste with a hint of cinnamon. Or try the Jamaican Blue Mountain Peaberry, which has an intense aroma and unusual sweetness typical of the Jamaica Blue Mountain region.

From Central America to the Asia Pacific, iGourmet has a vast selection of quality coffee beans. If you enjoy decaf try the Coffee and Chicory blend from the famous Café du Monde in New Orleans; it has a rich chocolate flavor that’s sure to delight.

Along with the coffee, there’s also a fine selection of teas ranging from herbal teas to white and black teas.

The Bad

Nothing. iGourmet’s club does deliver an excellent variety of coffees with various flavor profiles and origins.

Coffee Bean Freshness: (Rating: 6/10)

The Good

The coffee has the same quality you might get at a regular brick and mortar store, because it’s sourced from other vendors across America.

The Bad

The one downside to being a large retailer like iGourmet is that coffee freshness takes a hit. The coffee sits in packages until they’re shipped instead of being roasted on the spot and shipped within 24-48 hours like other online clubs. The site does offer fair trade and organic coffee, which may add to freshness, but overall, nothing beats freshly roasted beans.

Coffee Quality and Taste: (Rating: 0/10)

Unfortunately, iGourmet would not send us a free sample to try.

Instead, they expected us to commit to a three-month membership to try out their coffee. Also, customer service as well as social media ignored our requests for samples. Therefore, we were unable to try their coffee offerings and verify that they send what they say on their site.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 6/10)

The Good

With iGourmet there is a 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month coffee club package. Every month a 12-16 oz. package of coffee of the month is delivered. The only thing that iGourmet might lack are the dynamic choices of having coffee shipped weekly or biweekly like other clubs. Past that, it’s about $19.99 per month, which is around the same price as most other coffee clubs on the market.

The Bad

There is no free trial with iGourmet and you are required to try a minimum three-month commitment. We aren’t fans of these clubs, because if you don’t like the options, you’re still stuck without the option of a refund or cancellation.

Additional Club Perks: (Rating: 7/10)

The Good

Along with every shipment comes a monthly newsletter that highlights the finer points of that particular coffee. The information is quite detailed, expanding on the roasters technique, the optimal brewing procedures, and the style of roast the beans demonstrate. Another cool feature is the 100% satisfaction guarantee coming with the coffee. If you’re not satisfied, they will reship or refund your purchase.

The Bad

This club doesn’t offer that unique feeling that other clubs do. They don’t teach you how to taste the coffee, use fun apps, or even sell coffee making gear that helps you brew the perfect cup.

Shipping/Packaging: (Rating: 6/10)

The Good

Shipping is free for each coffee package, which is either shipped in a tub or a paper package. Most of the coffee brands do come in a tub, which is air sealed to maintain freshness. While other coffee clubs ship almost entirely in paper bags, iGourmet sources brands that are shipped in tubs and paper packages.

The Bad

We cannot confirm how their products are shipped, because iGourmet ignored our requests for samples and we weren’t ready to commit to a three-month contract just to try them out.

Gift Memberships: (Rating: 8/10)

The Good

We’ve talked about a few disadvantages to being a big online retailer, but in this section we get to talk about how iGourmet nails the gift membership section. If you want to repurpose the monthly club as a gift membership, that’s certainly possible.

Also, near the end of the checkout process you can choose to add a gift basket that includes an assortment of fine cheeses, beverages, and other delicious offerings. This certainly adds a wow factor to the gift membership that other coffee clubs can’t compete with.

There’s also a gift card section, which would prove extra valuable to iGourmet users considering the vast selection of other products on hand.

The Bad

You are still required to sign up for a three-month minimum gift subscription. So, if your recipient isn’t a fan of the coffees, they’ll have to stick around (and you won’t be able to refund your money).

Website: (Rating: 8/10)

The Good

The website is one of the strong points for iGourmet. Most other online coffee clubs have disorganized and confusing sites, but that’s not a problem with this online retailer. If I want to search coffee types by region, roast type, or brand, I can do that. With other coffee clubs they simply give you a coffee menu with no means of organization or filtering whatsoever. This is mildly maddening.

The Bad

There isn’t a blog for iGourmet, they don’t sell items to help improve your coffee experience, and they don’t have a robust FAQs section for the coffee of the month club.

Customer Service: (Rating: 5/10)

The Good

iGourmet shines with customer service, as it should! With it being a big online retailer, I was surprised at how quickly a customer service agent got to me on the phone. You can call a toll free number that’s open during the week from 9AM to 5, 6, and 7PM depending on the day. You can also live chat with an agent or email a longer question or response to the company.

The Bad

In reality, iGourmet’s customer service is non-responsive. They don’t respond to emails, they don’t respond to affiliates and live chat is always offline when you have questions. We were not impressed by this lack of customer service and it makes me wonder if this would occur to customers with problems.

FAQ's

Who is This Coffee Club Best Suited For?

iGourmet is for those that prefer a larger online retailer as opposed to the grassroots feel of smaller online coffee clubs.

What We Like About iGourmet

Good Gift Options: Like most of these larger companies, iGourmet does have an excellent selection of gifts. You can even order a gift basket in addition to the coffee of the month club.

Cheaper: When you compare the monthly price, iGourmet is definitely cheaper than the competition. In fact, their three-month subscription comes out to $19.99 per month for 12 to 16 ounces of coffee. Other clubs charge up to $30 per month for the same.

Free Shipping: It’s always nice to have free shipping. While most clubs also offer free shipping, there are some that will charge for delivery — so it’s worth noting.

Teas Available Too: Within the club you can order and receive teas as well as coffees. This makes the club better for those that like both. Though, this could be a disadvantage too for those that don’t like tea.

Discount for Annual Plan: If you choose the annual plan from iGourmet, you get a 10% discount. That brings the price down from $19.99 per month to $17.99 per month. But, you are in a 12-month contract.

Fair Trade and Organic Coffees: iGourmet does take their coffee procurement seriously, which means you will only receive Fair Trade and Organic coffee varieties.

Satisfaction Guarantee: iGourmet will reship or refund any purchase hassle-free if you aren’t satisfied. We are unsure how this will work if someone signs up for a 12-month commitment though.

What We Don't Like About iGourmet

Too Big Box: iGourmet’s biggest strength is also its only weakness. Because of the size of the operation, and its bend to be an online retailer, they don’t roast their beans fresh like other clubs. Their brand isn’t that of a smaller grassroots company—instead they are the large online retailer.

Not Freshly Roasted: The coffee isn’t shipped immediately after roasting or delivered with optimum taste and freshness in mind. This is important to note, because you are paying $20 per month for coffee that has sat on the shelves. Other coffee clubs are able to deliver their products in less than seven days from the date it’s roasted.

Locked In Contracts: While they boast about no contracts, they seem to forget the fact that you are stuck in a three-month minimum commitment. The only options you’re given are three, six and 12 months. There’s no month-to-month and no free trial.

Unresponsive Customer Service: While they may pride themselves on excellent customer service and satisfaction guarantees, we are skeptical if they actually deliver on that, especially when they ignore our emails, messages and other requests. From our experience, customer service is unresponsive.

No Coffee Education: Most coffee of the month clubs have fun educational opportunities — such as a coffee blog, how to’s or even podcasts and apps. iGourmet just ships coffee. They do include a newsletter, but when you compare them to other clubs, they don’t offer the same exposure and educational experiences.

Final Thoughts

iGourmet does have a lot of great selections when it comes to coffee, but you will not receive coffee that is freshly roasted and then delivered to your door. That being said, they could be more reliable than smaller, lesser known clubs. As long as you are willing to commit to a three month contract, iGourmet may be the ideal club for you or a family member (as a gift).

6.2 Total Score
Good selection of coffees, but freshness is lacking and membership options are restrictive.

iGourmet is all about bringing gourmet food items and beverages to their customers.
