Craft Coffee was started three years ago in Brooklyn, NY. After studying over 10,000 different brand ratings and analyzing numerous coffees scientifically, they’ve come up with a formula to match coffee to each customer online. Using a test, the company is able to ask questions and match coffee in line with people’s answers. That’s the unique selling point for Craft Coffee, and judging by their customer satisfaction ratings, they’re doing just fine.

Craft Coffee specializes in bringing custom coffee to customers using an advanced test online.

PROS:
  • Coffee ships within 24 to 72 hours of roasting
  • Great additional information on website
  • Gift Package is dynamic and fun
  • Unique test on site that tells you what coffee is best for you
CONS:
  • Poor customer service

Coffee Selection: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

Craft Coffee has an interesting selection of products. There's Red Label, which is the darkest roast available having a robust, smoky flavor. And there's also Blue Label, which is an easy-drinking, colorful alternative. Altogether there are 6 labels sprinkled throughout the light to dark spectrum.

Taking it one step further, they broke their coffee down into four categories: Everyday, Classic, Select, and Reserve. The Everyday brand gives the drinker the bare essentials while the Reserve is the best kind of coffee–world-class and distinctive.

Whether you like a medium-dark roast with sweeter, vibrant flavors or the bright aromas of the lightest roast, there's a coffee for everybody in this selection.

You can also pick between blends, single origin, and three-bag samplers with the coffee Craft Coffee recommends to find the perfect balance of coffee for your subscription.

The Bad

Nothing. Craft Coffee has a large selection of coffees that are based specifically on your tastes and preferences. And, you can change it up at any time.

Coffee Bean Freshness: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The coffee beans are shipped just 24 to 72 hours after roasting, making them just as fresh as any coffee club out there. After scientifically analyzing thousands of different coffees, it’s almost certain that Craft Coffee has selected only the finest beans for roasting.

Craft Coffee Dynamite

Craft Coffee Dynamite

All bags are vacuum-sealed and brown bag on the outside. They also feature a zip lock, so you can seal them up afterwards to keep them fresh.

Craft Coffee Roasted Date

Roasted Date

All of the bags are stamped with the date they were roasted. You can compare that date to the date you received your shipment notification to see how fast they actually ship. One bag shipped 24 hours after roasting!

The Bad

Craft Coffee is the epitome of freshness. Their beans ship quickly after roasting and they vacuum seal their bags to ensure maximum freshness upon transit.

Coffee Quality and Taste: (Rating: 10/10)

Craft Coffee Bags Sent

Craft Coffee Bags Sent

I took the test with Craft Coffee and opted for the three pack sampler. You can choose between bags and samplers, but I like to taste as much as possible.

I was very impressed with the coffee I received from Craft Coffee Club.

Craft Coffee Whole Beans

Craft Coffee Whole Beans

I received whole bean coffee. You could tell how fresh these were just from opening the bag. The aroma was amazing.

You can see my full experience in the experience blog.

Craft Coffee Germack

Craft Coffee Germack

Overall, all three coffees from Craft Coffee were excellent. I selected the type of coffee I normally drink and they suggested this dark roast sampler and I’m glad they did. I loved it.

None of the coffees were bitter. Instead, they were robust and smooth.

Craft Coffee Labels

Craft Coffee Labels

All of the coffees have tasting notes on the bags of beans, and they’re spot on. If it said “chocolate,” I tasted chocolate.

My favorite was the Into the Black coffee, which was Craft Coffee’s own flagship coffee.

The Bad

Absolutely nothing. I had zero complaints or criticisms about Craft Coffee’s selections. The coffees they picked for me based on their test were perfect and exactly what I enjoy drinking.

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good
The membership at Craft Coffee is very flexible. Customers can pick how many bags of coffee they want, and how often it gets delivered. From every week to every 12 weeks, the customer has complete control.

How the coffee is ground is also an element of the process that’s in the customer's control. It can be whole bean, French press, or ground for flat bottom and cone filters. That’s an extra perk to the membership that hasn’t been duplicated in other clubs.

Even though they suggest coffees, you are free to pick and choose what you want and then change to something else later.

Prices for coffee start at $9.99 to $15.99 for blend bags, $19.99 for single origin bags, and $24.99 for three-pack samplers. Bags are 12-ounces, while the samplers come with three 4-ounce bags, but you can upgrade to 8-ounce to 24-ounce bags if you want.

Price-wise, Craft Coffee is spot on with other gourmet clubs.

The Bad

Unlike other clubs, Craft Coffee’s pricing is random. Granted you can pick and choose what you want and change it at any time, so it’s not a big deal.

Additional Club Perks: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

Craft Coffee price matches! They promise that they will match store prices for similar coffee by $0.08 per ounce. We didn’t test this feature, but it is definitely something other club’s don’t offer.

They also offer brewing equipment, including automatic brew machines, fresh press kits, and pour over brew kits. Kits come with the equipment and filters.

The Bad

There are no free trials or opportunities to get free coffee.

Shipping/Packaging: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

Shipping is free, and the beans get to you within 5 business days after you sign up. You also designate how often you want your beans shipped, and you can cancel/pause at any time.

Craft Coffee Box

Craft Coffee Box

The box arrives clearly labeled.

Craft Coffee Initial Box Open

Initial Box Open

The packaging inside wasn’t anything special. Just bags of coffee stacked on top of one another in the box.

Craft Coffee Bag

Craft Coffee Bag

Each bag is clearly labeled with the name of the roaster, bean origin, tasting notes, and the date the coffee was roasted.

The Bad

If I had one complaint, the packaging isn’t as exciting as other clubs. There are some clubs that take presentation seriously — even if you’re just receiving coffee.

Gift Memberships: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

I was very impressed with the gift membership program at Craft Coffee.

If you want that special someone to have the gift of coffee for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months, then Craft Coffee has you covered. Each membership comes with free priority shipping, free gift email with a personalized note, and the highest quality(Reserve) coffee brand.

After an email is sent to the recipient, they can set up their own preferences for the coffee, truly making it their own. Additionally, the customer can put plans on hold and shipping to international locations is available for just a few extra dollars.

The Bad

There are no gift cards available. Instead, you must prepay for a gift membership.

Website: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

Craft Coffee has an extensive library of information about how to brew, how to grind, and other topics.

They also have a dedicated blog for those wanting to see other information about coffee.

The website is very professional and direct. It’s easy to maneuver the pages and find out all the information anyone would need when considering the club.

The Bad

Nothing. Craft Coffee obviously took their time putting together their website. It’s very informative, easy-to-use and I was able to find everything I was looking for online.

Customer Service: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

Customer service is another strong suit of Craft Coffee. Email, phone, and live chat are all options for anyone confused about the business.

They also run a few social media pages, so a quick shout out on Twitter is sure to get any and all answers covered in a short amount of time.

The Bad

While they do have plenty of customer service outlets, when we attempted to reach out to Craft Coffee through email and social media, they didn’t respond. We sent multiple messages with no response whatsoever from Craft Coffee. Since most customers rely on email to reach out to companies, we found this disappointing; therefore, we cannot give them a high customer service score.

We also attempted to reach out to them via their live chat and while they responded, we found their answers to our questions to show a lack of interest or desire to provide help or information. They were basic, canned responses without any detail or depth.

FAQ's

Who is This Coffee Club Best Suited For?

This coffee club is ideal for those wanting top notch coffee while also having maximum flexibility with their membership.

What We Like About Craft Coffee

Lots of Options: Craft Coffee has an impressive selection of coffee options. Even if you don’t like what they suggest, you can look at other coffee types and venture into roasts you normally don’t drink.

Custom Taste Test: When you first sign up for Craft Coffee, they ask what coffee you drink now. First, you’ll input the brand. Then, the roast. They use that information to find coffees with similar flavor profiles. Then, they give you the option to branch out to something like it, but slightly different. The goal is to help you slowly explore new coffees, but all while staying in your comfort zone.

Extreme Flexibility: Even if you pick one coffee, you can switch to another before your next shipment. You aren’t stuck with the same coffee unless you want it. You also can pick and choose shipping dates with ease — and cancellations are simple.

Sampler Packs: I’m always a fan of coffee clubs that offer sampler packs. I prefer to taste multiple coffees in the same month versus just one big bag. I love that you can choose between their 4-ounce and 8-ounce bags too. So, if you have a lot of coffee drinkers at home, you can get the bigger sampler to satisfy everyone.

Tons of Coffee Information: Craft Coffee has a plethora of information available on their site. They offer brewing tips, coffee education, and teach you to be a bean and roasting aficionado.

What We Don't Like About Craft Coffee

Poor Customer Service Response: While we love a lot about Craft Coffee, we are extremely disappointed in their customer service response. They didn’t respond at all. We reached out multiple times using their online contact info and even reached out on social media with no response. Hopefully, paying customers receive a response if they have an issue. When we did reach them via live chat, the response we got was less than enthusiastic or helpful – it actually left us with more questions.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Craft Coffee has a great product to offer. Their pricing and selection are excellent, and the concept is great. If they could improve their customer service, they could be a top contender in our coffee of the month clubs.
