The Ricky and Larry Coffee Club was created by The Coffee Cousins. This fun startup just got the wheels turning and already they are making a name for themselves in the coffee club niche. Their humor and creativity spans into their business concept as well as their coffee of the month club. With witty slogans and fun names for their coffee selections, the Ricky and Larry Coffee Club is fun and actually exciting to be a part of. You look forward to what they have to say next, but also of course, the coffee.

A fun coffee of the month club created for those that share a love for the “black juice.”

PROS:
  • Organic, Fair Trade Coffee Selections
  • 100% Arabica Beans
  • Roasted In-House
  • Beans and Grounds
  • Fun-to-Read Blog
  • Smooth, Delicious Coffee
CONS:
  • No K-Cups

Coffee Selection: (Rating: 8/10)

The Good

The Coffee Cousins specialize in organic, fair trade coffee. Their beans feature 100% Arabica from Honduras — and they are single origin. They do not offer decaf, but as true coffee lovers, that is because they don’t believe in decaf.

Each month you will receive a package of gourmet premium coffee delivered in beans or grounds to your door from the club.

The Bad

Right now they have just one variety, but are currently working on releasing another. As their company grows, they will continue to expand each month’s offering. Because they don’t have multiple coffees to choose from or send more than one coffee, they don’t score as well as other coffee clubs.

Coffee Bean Freshness: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The club roasts their beans in-house for maximum freshness. Even better, The Coffee Cousins are selective about who they let roast their beans. They work with a coffee roaster located in Wisconsin and they personally vetted multiple roasters across the country before selecting the roaster they would use for their beans.

Then, they take extra care using high-quality bags with one-way valves to seal in the freshness. You can also reuse the bags (since they feature a handy zipper), so that you can open it, scoop out what you need and store. I can personally attest to the smell — something I crave every morning.

Each time you open the zipper bag the aroma of freshly roasted beans takes you over. You don’t get that with beans that are not fresh. They offer dark and medium roasts, with a nice, bold and smooth flavor.

The Bad

Nothing. We were very impressed with the freshness of their coffee.

Coffee Quality and Taste: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

Coffee Cousins Front of Bag

Front of Coffee Bag

I was extremely impressed by the coffee selection from The Coffee Cousins. I got to try their Death to Zombies grounds (which you can also request in bean form).

Coffee Cousins Brewing Instructions

Brewing Instructions

If you’re new to brewing, they even have instructions/suggestions on their bag. This is quite helpful — since some coffees brew better at 6 ounces than 8 ounces.

Coffee Cousins Brewed Cup

Coffee Cousins Brewed Cup

The final result was excellent. The coffee’s aroma was hearty. You Can tell how fresh the beans are when your entire kitchen smells like the bag of coffee you just opened — so delicious. The flavor was not overpowering and it definitely was not acidic. Just like the bag promised, the coffee was extremely smooth. I drank mine black. It was that good! When you can drink a cup and not need creamer or sugar, that is a good sign.

There were no aftertastes to report, other than the good ones. Overall, it was an impressive cup of coffee and I will have it again…okay, I already did.

The Bad

If I had one complaint here it would be that it wasn’t as bold as I would have liked. But, not everyone is down for a super bold cup of coffee either. Since I only got to taste one variety, I cannot give them a perfect 10. But, when they add more coffee to their club, we will definitely be revisiting their samples!

Memberships/Pricing: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

There is just one membership with the Ricky and Larry Coffee Cousins Club. When you order through the membership, you get a 10 percent discount off the retail price. You can subscribe to weekly, bi-weekly or monthly shipments at $17.99 per bag (pound). You can add as many bags as you want to your membership too.

They allow you to pick between delivery for every 1 to 10 weeks, so you have plenty of customization opportunities. You pick the coffee you want as part of your subscription.

Soon you will see a two-pound bag option (32 ounces) for $29.99 being released — giving you more options to try out their coffee of the month club.

The Bad

Nothing. They have a great membership option, excellent price, and tons of flexibility.

Additional Club Perks: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

You can order within the club or outside of it. You can also order wholesale, but you will need to contact the in-house team directly. As a member of their club, you will receive special deals from time to time (exclusive to members).

The Bad

Nothing. We love that they offer opportunities to save and score deals on great coffee.

Shipping/Packaging: (Rating: 9/10)

The Good

Beans are roasted and then shipped using the club’s signature zipper bags.

Shipping is done via USPS using First Class or Priority Mail. You can expect your first shipment to arrive four to 12 days after ordering. There’s no expedited shipping.

Coffee Cousins Branding

Coffee Cousins Death to Zombies

The packaging, aside from their one-way valves, is pretty fun with this coffee club. As you can see from the picture, they are quite creative with their coffee selections. This month was the “Death to Zombies” — and it certainly was the cure to my mornings of walking around half dead (or is it half awake??).

Coffee Cousins Humor

Coffee Cousins Humor

They use up the entire bag for messages and tips. Like the bottom, for example. Here you find a tidbit of their humor.

Coffee Cousins Brewing Instructions

Brewing Instructions

They give you starting points for brewing on the bag too – most clubs don’t.

I actually appreciate the fact they use little packaging here. It is coffee; you don’t have to go crazy with bubble wrap here. If anything, the limited packaging is more eco-friendly.

As for cost to ship, the company offers free shipping on all orders over $49 for non-club shipments. For club memberships, you will get free first-class shipping. Soon they will be releasing a two-pound (32 ounce) membership plan that will also include free Priority shipping.

The Bad

Compared to other clubs, their shipments aren’t as fancy, but the coffee is still delicious.

Gift Memberships: (Rating: 7/10)

The Good

They do not have a specific gift membership, but you can order gift cards — which then can be applied to a gift membership. You can choose between $10, $25, $50 and $100 and then choose the quantity of cards you want.

You can set it up so that your gift card recipient receives a card each week to apply toward their membership as well — and you in turn receive a 10% discount. So, you could subscribe to two months of $25 gift cards and pay $22.50 per card.

The Bad

There are no special perks, unless you count the discount. The coffee doesn’t come in special packaging for gift recipients.

Also, there isn’t a specific gift membership, which may be a problem if you don’t want to do a gift card.

Website: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The website does tell you how to brew your coffee – including measurements for those coffee newbies out there. They have a fun, informative blog and tons of content to browse through. They make it easy to read and they even have a coffee store where you can purchase everything from hats to mugs to shirts.

The Bad

Nothing. We loved their site!

Customer Service: (Rating: 10/10)

The Good

The Good
The Coffee Cousins have excellent customer service. They are quick to respond to email inquiries – something a lot of these coffee clubs seem to lack. You can also contact them directly using their local number. For those pesky questions, you can refer to their FAQs section. They also have a blog, where you will find articles written by their owners giving you in-depth coffee lessons – such as the health benefits of coffee, Arabica vs. Robusta (yes, it matters), and even the history of coffee.

The Bad

Nothing. We love their responsiveness and attention to detail on their site.

FAQ's

Who is This Coffee Club Best Suited For?

The Coffee Cousins works for all walks of life. You could be completely new to coffee and learn the true art of roasting and picking coffee beans from The Coffee Cousins. If you’re a connoisseur, you’ll be impressed at their offerings and the work that they put into crafting their products. The price point is comparable and if you understand great coffee, then you will find the prices extremely fair.

What We Like About Coffee Cousins

Selective Roasters: I really appreciate the fact that The Coffee Cousins go above and beyond when choosing a roaster. For those that love (and really know coffee), the company that roasts the beans is just as important as where the beans come from. The fact that they personally vetted roasters before deciding on a local company is impressive.

Coffee Humor: The humor of their overall brand is something I have to comment on, in a positive way. I love how they inject humor into their products — you walk away remembering their site and everything about them. And, their coffee is darn good.

Great Price for Fair Trade Organic: When it comes to price, they have an excellent price for fair trade organic coffee and they deliver on the promise for smooth, delicious coffee.

Satisfaction Guarantee: If you are unsure about trying something new, they have a 90-day money back guarantee.

Supporting Small Business: Ultimately, you can tell they put a lot of love and effort into their product. They aren’t just a big corporation slapping on a label and shipping out products. They take time to craft their product and they personally try and pick their coffees. You can tell that they are coffee aficionados who understand what goes into a balanced cup of java.

What We Don’t Like About Coffee Cousins

No K-Cups: Honestly, there isn’t much I don’t like here. If I had one complaint, it is that I wish they had some K-Cups. But, hey, you could always put it into a reusable K-Cup filter — I’m not that lazy — but the convenience of popping it into my machine would be nice.

Final Thoughts

The Coffee Cousins have a great coffee of the month club that is fun and includes 100% Organic Fair Trade coffee. It’s worth the price and if you don’t like it, you have a satisfaction guarantee to fall back on. We would definitely try them again.
