We may earn money or products (at no cost to you) from the companies mentioned in this post. However, we do not let any merchant influence our ratings - even though they might like to. ;-) Some of our top rated merchants we have no relationship with, other than we like their products! Mozy

You can try 2GB of Mozy for Free with no credit card required.

$5.99/month

Cloud Backup

Mozy is owned by EMC Corporation, which is a world leader in information storage and data protection software. Your data is safe and secure with Mozy. This service is a great choice for the home user with a 2GB Free Plan that never needs upgrading to a paid plan. If you need more space, however, Mozy offers much more storage for affordable prices.

PROS:
  • Free account for unlimited time
  • Ability to throttle bandwidth usage
  • Will backup open files and Outlook files
  • Support for both online and local backups in a single application with 2xProtect
  • File sync across multiple devices

CONS:
  • No drag and drop
  • Deleted files kept for limited time
  • No file sharing

Access: (Rating: 8/10)

Mozy is accessible from one computer, Android and iPhone smartphones, and anywhere else with browser capability. Whether you prefer to browse historic files on a tablet or laptop, Mozy is there for you. Mozy users can restore files from the website or their own desktop simply by right-clicking. The personal plan works with one computer and each additional computer costs $2 more per month.

Backup: (Rating: 6/10)

You can backup data both locally and online all in one application for one great price. With Mozy’s 2xProtect, select a local drive and Mozy will create a “Mozy Local Backup” directory. You no longer need separate applications to backup data to different locations.

You have the option to have backups performed when your computer is idle or schedule backups to be performed daily, weekly, monthly.

Unfortunately, Mozy’s versioning is limited to five total versions and restricted by space.

Restore: (Rating: 8/10)

Mozy has a plethora of ways to restore a computer, from downloading all files from the web to ordering files on a DVD or even downloading a single file. Mozy keeps deleted or replaced files for 30 days, and then they’re unable to be recovered. This is in sharp contrast to other backup services that keep older versions forever. However, the company stresses that they’re not a syncing or archiving service, so they have no plans to offer features like this.

Share: (Rating: 2/10)

Mozy is first and foremost a backup solution, not a sharing program. The company doesn’t offer a convenient way to share files with anyone, aside from giving them your password, which compromises the security of your account.

Sync: (Rating: 6/10)

By itself, Mozy has no syncing capabilities whatsoever. The company offers a separate program with this function, called Mozy Sync. This syncing software is available to everyone with a paid account. It’s not downloadable by free users, and it doesn’t come with additional storage space. Although the software is impressive and likely one of the best syncing programs out there, it’s still a program separate from Mozy backup. We’ve removed stars because you have to download, install, and setup another application.

Security: (Rating: 6/10)

Security is a priority at Mozy by EMC, although their methods have been criticized by experts. Mozy prides itself in encrypting data before it leaves the user’s computer. They securely transfer it to their servers, and then store it. The problem is that Mozy does everything, so they essentially make the lock and key. You can choose a password, but there’s no guarantee that Mozy employees can’t access it anyway. In fact, Mozy can help recover a lost password if they generated it, so they must have access to user files. Furthermore, the company says they “don’t” access user files, not that they can’t.

At least they’re trying.

Help & Support: (Rating: 8/10)

Mozy doesn’t offer phone or live chat support to free customers, and even paid MozyHome customers must pay extra for phone support. MozyEnterprise and MozyPro reap the benefits of free phone support. Every account, no matter how much they pay, has access to community forums, a knowledgebase, tutorials, and other documentation. We removed one star because finding help as a MozyHome user can be confusing. It’s also questionable that such a large company, boasting offices around the world with hundreds of employees, can’t offer free phone support to everyone.

What we Like about Mozy

Free account for unlimited time: Mozy offers a free 2GB account to home users, that you can can use for an unlimited amount of time. You can also use this to test out the waters at Mozy before committing to one of the paid Mozy Home plans. This way you can be sure that Mozy is a good feel and fit for you before putting money on the table.

Bandwidth throttle: You can limit the amount of internet bandwidth that Mozy is allowed to utilize during certain hours. This is highly beneficial if you are operating a business on the computer that you are also trying to backup. You can tell Mozy that it’s only allowed to use a amount of the bandwidth so that you are still able to work during those hours. Or you can enable bandwidth throttling all the time.

Local as well as Online Backup: With Mozy you can now backup your data both locally and online, all in one application for one great price. With Mozy’s new 2xProtect, you can now select a local drive and Mozy will create a “MozyLocalBackup” directory to hold your backup in, as well as backup your data to mozy’s servers. You no longer need separate applications to backup your data locally and online.

Mozy File Sync: Mozy allows you to sync files across any or all computers, tablets and mobile devices you link to your Mozy Sync folder. Mozy Online Backup and Mozy sync are complementary, but work indepedently as well. Online Backup, backs up your files at a scheduled time and makes them available to you via Mozy mobile apps and the Mozy website, however Online backup will never update other computers. Unlike Online Backup, Mozy Sync sends your updates to your Mozy account as they happen rather than on a set schedule.

Scheduled or Idle Time Backups: You have the option to either have your backups performed when your computer is idle after a certain amount of time, or you can schedule your backups to be performed daily, weekly, monthly

What we Don't Like about Mozy

No drag and drop: With today’s GUI capabilities, lacking a drag and drop interface is a definite drawback in our opinion. It’s not just a convenience anymore, but almost a necessity for applications to support it for ease of use.

Files kept for limited time: On the Mozyhome free account, files are only kept for 30 days. It’s two months for the monthly Home account. If you don’t backup regularly, and your account goes inactive, you risk losing backup data, so make sure you’re backing up within these windows to ensure your efforts aren’t wasted.

Backing Up Files with Mozy

Selecting Files on Windows: Selecting files with Mozy is quite simple. The user will right click on their Mozy app icon, then select Settings, then More Settings. Here the user will select File System. Then the files and folders for backup can be clicked. Everything checked will be automatically synced and backed up.

Backing Up Files on Mac: Mac users must first select the Mozy icon, then Open Mozy Preferences. Files and folders are then selected. If the file has a green dot next to its name, it is already selected for backup and is being automatically updated.

Restoring Your Files with Mozy

Restoring All Files: You can restore all files (such as for a full system restore) through the online system. The fastest way to recover all files is by using Mozy's Restore Wizard. This walks you through the process step-by-step and simplifies restoration.

Restoring Older Versions: Mozy does allow you to recover old versions of files that were changed in Mozy. Previous versions are only kept for 30 days for home users; therefore, if you are past the 30 day mark, you may be unable to restore the previous versions. To restore a single file or folder, select the date and time of the file in your Mozy backup software. You can browse the file versions through the file history, but note you will still only be able to see back 30 days.

7 Total Score
Good

Mozy is a cloud backup hosting company that seeks to be exactly that. They keep only the latest backup of your data on their servers and everything is encrypted before it even leaves your computer. Mozy offers services to both free and paid users. It’s easy to set up with an automatic selection process, but selected files can be reviewed and easily modified to meet specific needs. With Mozy 2.0, new users also get 2xProtect, which is a local backup option for no additional cost.
