Cloud Backup

MediaFire is a file-sharing online backup service with excellent functionality. While they are not your traditional cloud storage – and for some, may not even be considered a true backup – they do excel at file sharing and syncing. And, they offer an astounding 50GB of free storage space.

A non-traditional cloud backup with up to 50GB of free storage space.

PROS:
  • 50GB of free storage
  • Mobile ready
  • Automatic backups
  • Cheap paid plans
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • No file size or type restrictions
  • Import from URL
  • Non-users can add to MediaFire account

CONS:
  • Must access account online annually to avoid auto cancellation
  • No bandwidth control options
  • Tons of advertisements

Access: (Rating: 10/10)

You can access your MediaFire account via the online portal, your mobile phone app or via the desktop app. It is easy to access and definitely user-friendly for those who are not familiar with online backup services. To backup, you just add items to your MediaFire – but if you don’t put it in there, it doesn’t backup. You can add users if you pay for the professional accounts too.

Backup: (Rating: 9/10)

Backups are automatic with MediaFire and you are not restricted by bandwidth, file type or size. But, you cannot throttle or control your bandwidth – so if you are uploading a larger file you could encounter a few issues. MediaFire uses a drag-and-drop backup style to make it easy to add items to your MediaFire account. MediaFire does support Windows, Mac and mobile phones. You also get up to 50GB of free storage space – which is one of the largest in the industry. There is no external or NAS support and you cannot backup to a local device.

Restore: (Rating: 9/10)

MediaFire automatically syncs data across all devices, so restoring is as easy as logging in and downloading what you need. There isn’t a hard copy restore feature though, so you will have to download or install the desktop app to get instant access to file. Automatically the program stores up to 10 previous versions of your files. If you accidentally delete a folder or file, you can recover it in the trash.

Share: (Rating: 10/10)

Sharing with MediaFire is rather easy. You can share everything from files to videos and even documents. From your mobile device or web app, you can generate a share link. MediaFire also lets you create collaborative folders – and you can control how much access they have to those files and whether or not they can edit or update them. You can also invite people via social media or share straight to social media. Sharing, is by far, one of MediaFire’s most impressive features – and obviously what they designed their service around.

Sync: (Rating: 10/10)

MediaFire automatically syncs files if they are in your MediaFire account. So if you update it on your desktop, it will automatically backup and sync to all other devices. You can pause syncing via the desktop app. You can also monitor progress by looking for a green check mark to make sure the item has synced. But, you need access to the Internet for everything to sync.

Security: (Rating: 6/10)

MediaFire uses an SSL encryption when transferring files to their servers. Then, all files are encrypted while stored. They do not have the zero-knowledge passwords or storage, so there are still some vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, they do not state if they use geo-redundant or hardened facilities; therefore, we cannot confirm their full security capacity.

Help & Support: (Rating: 4/10)

MediaFire has an impressive knowledge base where you can find answers to just about any question you have. But, it is really slow when you try to search in it – so just be prepared to wait for answers. Support is not as impressive – with the only option being to submit a ticket to the help desk.

What We Like About MediaFire

Free Account: Free storage is always nice to see, though it is unclear how a user can get up to 50GB. The basic plan still offers 10GB of free storage space, which is always great to have.

Drag and Drop Storage: Instead of going through complex steps just to backup, users can enjoy a drag and drop backup on their desktop as well as through the web portal.

Desktop and Mobile Ready: It is nice when you can access your files anywhere you go. MediaFire does have their online portal, desktop app and mobile app so you can find, edit, share and sync no matter where you’re working from.

Easy Sharing and Collaboration: You can share via email, social media and even add people to files and folders for collaboration. While these features are disabled on the free account, you can still access them with their relatively affordable paid account.

Cheap Storage: After you run out of free storage, you can sign up for their 1TB plan that is less than $3 per month and offers all of the MediaFire features.

What We Don’t Like About MediaFire

Free Account is Supported by Advertisements: There is nothing more annoying than trying to work or retrieve something and have ads flying all over your workspace. Other online storage companies with free accounts do not support their product with advertisements, like Dropbox. Therefore, this is an unnecessary feature.

Security Methods Not Clear: MediaFire states that they use SSL encryption, but they do not say which level they use. They do not let you know if they have hardened facilities or even geo-redundant facilities – so it is very unclear how secure your information is. Most cloud backup providers have no problem telling you the type of security they offer, which makes us wonder if the security is not as great with MediaFire – or if they just overlooked that aspect during marketing creation.

How to Backup with MediaFire

The desktop app for MediaFire is relatively easy to use; therefore, it is best to touch on the web app, which some users may find difficult.

1. Sign in to your online account at the MediaFire website.
2. Click Create New Folder, then name the folder. You can create subfolders from this section too if needed.
3. Click on the name of the folder you want to upload, then click the + Add Files button.
4. Click From Computer, then + to Select Files to Upload.
5. Select each file or folder you wish to upload, then select Begin Upload.

You can monitor the progress via the progress bar on the website. Then select Return to My Files to see them online.

How to Restore with MediaFire

Restoring files with MediaFire is easy since everything is automatically synced. Just download the software, sign-in and you have instant access. But, if you accidentally delete something or you want to restore to a previous version, you have a few more steps ahead of you.

To Restore a Deleted File or Folder:
1. Select on the Trash folder.
2. Check the box next to the deleted item to add a check mark. Select Restore, then any item with a check mark will automatically restore.

To Restore to a Previous Version:
1. Open your MediaFire cloud account online.
2. Go to the Files App. Find the file, then right click and select Previous File Version.
3. Select which version you would like to restore, then click Restore.
