JustCloud Review

Rating:
  2/10

The short answer to the question – “Has JustCloud paid for their #1 ratings on most review websites?” is – Yes they most definitely have. They get that #1 rating by paying out very large affiliate commissions to those websites – in some cases, very large guaranteed payouts for that #1 spot.

JustCloud is an online backup service developed by Just Develop It, a software development company out of Whiteley, Hampshire, United Kingdom. They also own MyPCBackup and ZipCloud, which are almost identical in features and pricing to JustCloud. Although looking good when graded on features and functionality alone, we do not recommend JustCloud due to their shady “bait-and-switch” marketing practices that lure customers in under the promise of unlimited storage and then either force them to upgrade to more expensive plans or cancel their plans entirely – and without refunds.

PROS:
  • Drag and drop functionality
  • Audio/visual file types included by default

CONS:
  • No support for Linux
  • 5GB file size limit
  • Additional fee structure for upgrades
  • Fair Use Policy
  • Annoying upsell pop-ups
  • Does not completely uninstall
  • Bait and switch tactics for unlimited plans
  • Hard to cancel

Access: (Rating: 8/10)

JustCloud provides mobile apps for iOs and Android users. You can access these apps via their respective app stores. Now it’s easy to backup or sync mobile pictures and music with your computers. Unfortunately, there is no support for Linux users.

Backup: (Rating: 8/10)

JustCloud has the ability to backup any file, regardless of type. This means that you can backup things like music, video, pictures, documents, executables, graphics and more. In addition, by default JustCloud keeps 7 days worth of file versions, but this can be changed to 30 days or even unlimited. File versions are helpful in the event that you accidentally delete or change a file. With versioning, you can simply roll it back to a previous version.

Restore: (Rating: 10/10)

There’s no benefit to having a backup if you can’t restore files when needed. With JustCloud, restoring files is simple. Restore any files from both the Control Panel and desktop application in just a few clicks. Restoring from the desktop application is as easy as clicking on the “Restore Files” button. If you have backed up multiple computers, you’re asked which computer you want to restore, and then you’re able to browse through the backed up files and folders to select the ones you wish to restore. Finally, you’re asked to select the location(s) you want to restore the files to, or even create a new location. At this point, the restore process begins.

Share: (Rating: 8/10)

Now with JustCloud you can share files, photos, folders and a whole lot more with family and friends by inviting them via Facebook, Twitter, email or even a custom link you create yourself. Supposedly public file sharing is coming soon – where you will be able to send a link to a friend to have them download a file and view it. No public file sharing available at this time.

Sync: (Rating: 8/10)

JustCloud provides a scheduled backup that backs up files to an off-site location but it also provides users with a sync folder (15MB with free trial). When upgraded to a paid version, users receive 1GB, with an option to upgrade even more to 200GB. Select files to sync between multiple computers, and enjoy no more manually syncing files to multiple computers or carrying around flash drives. It’s as easy as dragging and dropping a file into your sync folder, or right clicking on the file and selecting the “Add to Sync Folder“.

With JustCloud you get a 1GB sync folder with your paid version of the software. This is where you are able to store any file or folder that you want to have synced to your other devices. This folder can be upgraded to a total of 20GB, and they are working on increasing this to give you even greater sizes in the near future.

Security: (Rating: 8/10)

JustCloud transfers all data using a 256 bit AES encryption. This is the same technology used by banks for financial transactions. They also utilize full server mirroring, which means their servers are duplicated to completely separate data centers around the world. This protects you in case of physical disasters or power outages at the primary JustCloud server location. In this case, JustCloud uses Amazon S3 Servers located in both Europe and the US.

Help & Support: (Rating: 2/10)

JustCloud customer support is hit or miss. Some customers haven’t had issues with getting support and swear by them, while others say that support tickets go for days or even weeks without a response. As far as refunds for unused features, such as too much storage, again some customers have no issue getting a refund, while others complain that they’re due a refund and didn’t receive it.

We noticed that all of the “help” twitter accounts – JustCloudHelp, ZipCloudHelp, and MyPCBackupHelp – have been inactive for a year now. This seems to indicate they have abandoned these accounts, which certainly can’t be a good sign.[/wpsm_tab]

What we Like about JustCloud

Drag and drop functionality: JustCloud has “drag-and-drop” functionality. All you need to do is drag and drop the files you want to backup. This will immediately backup the files you’ve selected rather than waiting for the scheduled backup.

Audio/visual file types included by default: In previous versions of the client, JustCloud excluded most audio/visual files (MP3,MP4,WMV,MOV,AVI,AAC) by default. In the newer versions starting with version 1.4.03.05, these file types are no longer excluded. It’s one less setting change for users with comprehensive music and video collections.

What we Don't Like about JustCloud

No Support for Linux: Sorry Linux users… as of now, JustCloud only supports Mac and Windows based PC’s.

5GB file size limit: The 5GB maximum file size limit is actually an Amazon S3 limitation and not a limitation imposed solely by JustCloud. The truly unfortunate part about this setting is that it defaults to 2MB. If you don’t change this setting, you might end up few backed up files. This can be easily changed from the 2MB default to 5GB.

Additional fee structure for upgrades: JustCloud charges extra for certain upgrades. For instance, if you find you want to upload more than the the standard of 3-4GB/day, it’ll cost an additional fee. They call this “supercharging” and it moves your uploads to a server with less load, thus making file queuing speed faster. If you want more space than the 1GB sync file that comes standard with your service, that will also cost you an additional fee to upgrade(this one you will probably want to upgrade if you are serious about syncing multiple computers).

If you need additional file versions other than the seven JustCloud keeps as the standard, then that is an upgrade and will cost you extra as well. Also, if you want to go from a daily backup to hourly – that will also cost you more (we found a daily backup to be more than sufficient for our needs, however). Below is a complete list of upgrades and costs for each:

Supercharged Backups
$14.95/year
Moves your backup to a server with less load. Increases uploads by 40%-50%
Priority Support
$9.95/year
Reduces support calls from an average of 2 hours to under 30minutes. 24/7 365 days a year.
5GB Sync Folder
$15.95/year
upgrades your sync file space
10GB Sync Folder
$49.95/year
upgrades your sync file space
20GB Sync Folder
$97.95/year
upgrades your sync file space
5GB Max File Size
$19.95/year
increases your max file size from 1GB(standard) to 5GB. Normally not necessary.
Unlimited Versions
$49.95/year
increases the file versions stored from 7 to unlimited
Hourly Backup
$19.95/year
backups will run hourly rather than daily
Additional Licenses
$24.95/year
add additional computers/devices to your plan and save considerably on the cost
Backup Network Drives
$99.95/year
add the ability to backup network drives without upgrading to a business account
Automatic Video Backup
$9.95/year
have videos automatically included in your backup. You can still drag and drop videos to your backup without this option

Annoying upsell popups: They’re intent on upselling features to the point that pop-ups show up over and over again. For example, you might see the pop-up below come up after you complete a backup. This can be very confusing. You may also see a warning stating that “your files are not protected” after completing a backup and asking you to press the “Protect Now” button. Again, this action takes you to an upgrade screen, coaxing you to spend more money.
JustCloud popup-offer

Fair Use Policy: Read the “Terms and Conditions” when signing up for any product or service. In the case of JustCloud, there is a Fair Use Policy that defines what they consider excessive use and the potential ramifications if you’re identified as a violator of this policy. Fair Use Policies are common and protect the merchant from various forms of abuse of their product or service. With regards to this topic, be sure to check out our article on “Unlimited Storage. Is it Really Unlimited?”

Does Not Completely Un-install: When we went to un-install JustCloud, what to our amazement came up?  Another annoying pop-up that took us to their website asking us not to leave, but to extend our subscription instead!  Seriously??? This is really taking the up-sell/hard-sell tactic to an all time low!  At the point of un-installing the software I don't want to be hounded to extend my subscription, that boat has sailed…  just un-install the darn program already!   We clicked “no thanks”, but it did not appear to uninstall Justcloud from our system, and the JustCloud program folder was still displaying.  We clicked on it again, to uninstall, and now we got an error message saying “An error occurred while trying to uninstall JustCloud.  Would you like to remove JustCloud from the Programs and Features List”.  Well “yes” thank you,  I would.  So we then went snooping around in our “Programs” directory and low and behold there was a “JustCloud” folder sitting full of “stuff”.   This is a simple and fundamental issue – a program should cleanly uninstall itself. Period.

Impossibly hard to cancel: Attempting to cancel a JustCloud Subscription is a trying process at best. You might face rounds of email exchanges, support tickets, attempts by JustCloud to upsell or keep you from canceling, and additional charges to your credit card. In addition, few of those that successfully canceled had their money refunded.

Backing up with JustCloud

How to Schedule JustCloud
JustCloud performs scheduled backups. What this means is that you setup a backup schedule that JustCloud will follow – by default this is daily at a time you specify. You can upgrade this to hourly if you need, however most people will find that daily backups are sufficient for their needs.

As of right now JustCloud does not offer a continuous backup option. This is where files are backed up on the fly as they change, rather than at a scheduled time.
How to Schedule JustCloud
As we mentioned earlier there is a 2MB file size limit by default. We strongly suggest that you go in and change this to the 5GB limit. You will not be able to backup much at the 2MB limit. We are not sure why it is set so low by default.

With JustCloud you can also backup immediately. Let's say you have an important file that you've made changes to and you want to back it up, all you need to do is right click on the file and select “JustCloud Backup -> Instant Backup”. It's that simple.

As a final option, you can also use the new drag and drop functionality by simply dragging the file and dropping it into the JustCloud application.

All JustCloud backups are encrypted using 256 bit encryption and stored on Amazon S3 servers. You know you are getting data center security, stability, and reliability with Amazon.

Restoring with JustCloud

JustCloud offers it's users two ways to restore files. If you are restoring a small number of files it's best to use the online control panel and select the files you want to restore. Click on the file and it will download to your local system.

If you want to do a larger restore, then it's best to use the desktop application. Simply select the “Restore” button, at which time you will be asked which computer you want to restore from and which files. Select the files and click the “restore selected files” button. You will be asked where you want to restore the files to. Select a location and press “ok”.  After the files are restored to your computer, you can then move them to where you want them.

2 Total Score
Shady Marketing & Bait-and-Switch Tactics

If it weren’t for JustCloud’s shady marketing practices that attempt to lure customers in with the false promise of unlimited backup, we would give them the score based on their features and functionality. However when you take everything into account, they just do not hit the mark! Users quickly find out that once you go over JustCloud’s “Average Usage” mark, that they must either upgrade to a much more expensive plan, or simply find out their service plan has been canceled without warning.
