What is the Best Cloud Storage for You?

In the day of intangible data, where to store that data and who to trust are both very important questions each business and individual must ask themselves. There are a plethora of cloud backup companies who all offer a wide range of services. Choosing between them can be challenging and overwhelming. By providing a comprehensive comparison of the best cloud storage and backup companies out there today, we hope to give potential users a clearer idea of what company may work best for them.

Below are key differences and features of two popular cloud backup service providers—Sync and CrashPlan.

Access

Sync has easy to use access options, but you have to install the software of app for use. You can access files with mobile devices. The mobile app is for iPhone, iPad, android and desktop.

They also have collaboration tools available for multi-user access. Sync allows for shared files for invited clients, which may be a big draw for professional use. They also provide offline access to data.

CrashPlan has mobile apps for ios and android so you can view files on devices. However, they offer no file sharing options or file syncing. The inability to share files may make it more suited for private or personal use compared to business use.

Backup

Sync automatically syncs files when saved and there are no file size or bandwidth limitations. They provide real-time backups and give users instant access to the latest versions of data on any device they use, if the Sync app is installed. Even with automatic backup and syncing of files, you can restore any version of a file at any time.

They offer remote wipe, which is highly beneficial for users if a device or computer is stolen.

CrashPlan lets you choose a location for backup and they do not have file size or bandwidth limitations. You can choose between the cloud, local drive, a friend’s computer, or another computer with a CrashPlan account. This service lets you select exactly what you want backed up and where. You can automatically backup documents, music, and photos. As for system files, manual backup is necessary. You can also choose to have data continuously backed up or set a schedule.

Restore

Sync gives users the ability to restore deleted files. If users get a new computer and install the software, that user can get access to saved files. But, users can’t restore an entire computer. Sync has a plan that allows users to use utilize remote wipe of data.

CrashPlan offers what it calls “Guaranteed Restore Technology”. CrashPlan allows you to restore files from desktop, a web restore, and a guest restore. Each night, the company runs integrity checks on backup files and fixes any problems that may arise. The company will notify users through email if there is an issue that they are unable to rectify.

CrashPlan also provides “Restore to your door”. This is a full system restore for $124.99. You can pay $164.99 for overnight delivery where they will send a 1 TB drive with the requested data.

Cost

Sync has two plans for users in need of a cloud backup service, plus a free option. Each plan provides 5 GB of free storage. Those plans include:

  • Free—this plan offers 5 GB of storage and never expires.
  • Sync Pro—500 GB of storage for $49/year
  • Sync Pro 2TB—2 TB of storage for $98/year

It is noted that the 500 GB as part of the Pro level plan is much more than needed for a single user. There are also no restrictions on the number of computers.

CrashPlan has four plans for users to pick from. These plans include:

  • Free—this plan provides unlimited offsite and local backup. It only offers online backup for 30 days. The free plan comes with 128 bit file encryption.
  • Individual—this plan cost $5/month and comes with unlimited online backup and multiple destination backup. This plan is for 1 computer.
  • Family—for $12.50/month, you get unlimited online backup to multiple destinations. This plan is for 2 to 10 computers.
  • Business—This plan cost $10/month and provides backup for unlimited computers.

Security

Sync provides one security feature that appeals to everyone regardless of amount or type of data to be stored. They offer zero-knowledge protection. This means no one, not even employees of Sync have access to data or passwords. This is a privacy guarantee. Files are also encrypted. They also provide remote wipe services to delete files in the event of theft or a choice to wipe a device clean.

Sync users can receive customized notifications that alert them if someone accesses files or tries to change files. Any shared files include customized passwords for viewing the content.

CrashPlan uses encryption technology. You have to enter the account password every time you access the account. CrashPlan touts military-grade security standards for users and has servers around the country which are guarded 24/7.

So What is the Best Cloud Storage for Business or Personal Use?

Sync may be overall best suited for business use because it provides ton of storage, with 2 TB for its highest plan. Also, the sharing features with multi-user administration tools so users can collaborate would be useful, but naturally would be useless for personal use. The remote wipe feature may also appeal to business users.

CrashPlan does not have file sharing, which would make it fine for personal use. The ability to backup to multiple destinations may prove appealing for personal use, especially when it comes to pictures or irreplaceable files. The 30 free online backup plan can give personal users the chance to see if CrashPlan meets all of their needs.

Although CrashPlan may seem more ideal for personal use, it does have a business plan that allows for use with unlimited computers. The “Restore to your door” may also prove to be lifesaver for a business who has experienced a computer failure or theft that requires quick access to data on new computers.
