Rating and Scoring
Accounting and Business Tasks: (Rating: 10/10)
QuickBooks Premier is a single solution accounting program that offers all of the basic accounting and business tasks you would need. They offer basic income and expense tracking, bill tracking, advanced reporting, profit and loss statements, accountant collaboration tools, shipping rate trackers, importing banking transactions, invoicing, estimates, cash flow, inventory and more.
They even offer real-time bill status that helps you see what bills are due and how that impacts your company’s cash flow. Their dashboard features quick snapshots as well as links so you can input faster. One thing that makes QuickBooks Premier unique is their industry-specific setup options – such as general business, contract work, manufacturing, etc.
Invoicing: (Rating: 10/10)
Invoicing is much more in-depth with QuickBooks Premier (which is common with desktop versions). You can pick and choose your template and then customize it to suit your company needs. You can also create custom estimates and then convert them into invoices. Invoices are displayed in one area so that you can remind customers of their due dates or past due invoices too.
You can also invoice multiple customers at a single time via their batch invoicing option. Recurring invoicing can also be setup as well as recurring estimates. While it is a desktop program, the invoices can still be sent from the program using your Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail account.
To collect credit card payments on your invoices, you will need to sign up for QuickBooks Payments, which is an additional fee.
Management: (Rating: 10/10)
The management is robust with QuickBooks Premier. Not only can you manage your inventory rather extensively – such as setting up SKUs, creating reorder points, tracking value of inventory, etc., but you can also manage your entire staff on the program.
QuickBooks Premier allows you to track time for employees, projects, clients and even subcontractors. You can also track customers with in-depth reports that tell you current projects by customer, outstanding balances, revenue earned from projects, etc.
If you have vendors and bills, those can be entered into QuickBooks Premier and then you can pay those vendor bills from the system by printing checks or entering digital payments. Purchase orders and some project management tasks are also included.
If you have a POS, you can integrate it with your Premier account.
Ease of Use: (Rating: 7/10)
QuickBooks Premier can be difficult to figure out at first – especially when compared to the more user-friendly online versions of QuickBooks and other companies. But, they have tons of help guides in the program as well as online to walk you through the process. Setup with QuickBooks Premier is likely to take longer than the online version, because you will be dealing with a desktop application that you are linking elsewhere.
Not everything is automated with QuickBooks Premier like it is with online accounts, but they do their best to make it as simple and convenient as possible.
Access: (Rating: 7/10)
QuickBooks Premier limits you on user accounts and you can provide an accountant with access, but that will consume one of your user accounts. Because it is a desktop version, the syncing is not as accurate or quick as the online versions of QuickBooks – which may be a problem if you have multiple people accessing it.
Also, remote access or mobile access isn’t really an option; instead, you need to access from a computer on a network.
There is no online backup with QuickBooks Premier unless you opt for the annual plan. The annual version costs $299.95 per year and you get automatic upgrades to new versions and data backups. If you don’t do this plan, you pay the one-time download fee of $379.95.
Taxes: (Rating: 7/10)
While there are tons of features with QuickBooks Premier, it doesn’t allow you to file your taxes through the software itself – but it does everything it can to prepare you for tax time. Premier lets you import banking transactions and categorize them based on how you file, track sales tax and income, and you can file payroll taxes if you sign up for their payroll service (additional fee).
You can create and print 1099s through the program without a payroll add-on, but to print W2s you will need to add QuickBooks Enhanced Payroll, which starts at $27.30 per month plus $2 per employee per month.
Pricing: (Rating: 10/10)
The one-time upfront price of Premier may turn people away, but when they compare how much they will pay annually for online versions, they may think twice. QuickBooks Premier starts at $379.95 for a one-time download. No monthly or annual payments after that. QuickBooks Plus, the closest online version to Premier, start at $23.97 per month for six months and then $39.95 per month after that. If you add it up, you will pay $383.52 per year for QuickBooks Plus. If you sign up for the annual plan of QuickBooks Premier the price drops to $299.95 – over $100 less than you would pay for QuickBooks Plus online.
Payroll is in addition to QuickBooks one-time fee and starts at $27.30 per month for six months, then $39.00 per month after that plus $2 per employee per month.
Customer Service: (Rating: 9/10)
There is plenty of help with QuickBooks Premier and all QuickBooks products. They have numerous tutorials, user guides and community options to guide you through using your new software.
Customer service is also available when you need support – though they don’t always make it easy to find. To contact support you will have to pick the topic you need help with and then they will pinpoint which customer service option is right for you – which can range from chat to phone to email tickets. They aren’t available 24/7, but they are extremely quick to respond to emails and inquiries.
Intuit, the maker of QuickBooks Premier, current has an A+ rating and they have been accredited since 2010.

What Type of Business Could Use This Software?
QuickBooks Premier has a lot of great features, but those features won’t work for everyone. They are not ideal for small businesses just starting out, independent contractors or freelancers. Their features are too robust. They are, however, ideal for companies that need industry-specific setup features and reports. Their intuitive inventory management options also make them great for retailers (big and small).

What We Like About Quickbooks Premier
Industry-Specific Setups: Not all accounting programs offer this and it is definitely something to consider, but QuickBooks Premier allows you to setup your program with tasks specific to your industry. For example, if you are a wholesaler or retailer, you can setup for inventory management, track sales results, monitor inventory costs and even run profit and loss reports specific to retail only. If you are a non-profit, you can create Form 990, run a donor contribution summary and even create end-of-year donation statements.
Advanced Features: The nice thing about desktop accounting programs is the features. All desktop versions seem to have more robust options for businesses – and they are easier to tailor to your business. QuickBooks Premier is one of those programs.

What We Don't Like About Quickbooks Premier
No Mobile Access: This is a serious drawback to desktop versions versus online versions. With QuickBooks Premier, you don’t have online or mobile access. Even if you sign up for the annual plan, you only have backups – not cloud access. For business owners that need to access finances from the road, QuickBooks Premier will prove to be extremely limited.
Time Tracking: QuickBooks Premier does let you enter timesheets, but they don’t have time trackers. This is a feature we hope to see added to more QuickBooks products in the future.
