Scoring and Rating
Accounting and Business Tasks: (Rating: 10/10)
QuickBooks Plus is definitely the more robust option when looking at QuickBooks online products. It does the obvious accounting tasks – such as tracking income and expenses, but it also allows you to download transactions from the bank and credit cards for faster entry.
You can also print checks, record transactions, import Excel data, manage and pay vendors, enter bills and schedule payments, invoice, compare sales trends for better marketing, track inventory and even create and send purchase orders.Quickbooks Online Plus – Report Options
(Click for Larger Image)Billable hours can also be tracked by customer and expenses can be classified as well as categorized – so you could classify them by customer if you wanted to as well.
Overall, Plus has all of the basic accounting features a small to medium-sized business would need.
They even include over 65 different reports to help better monitor your company’s progress.
One feature QuickBooks Plus has that is especially important is budgeting. You can set budgets, estimate future income and expenses and keep your company on track. Other Online family versions do not have the budgeting option and plenty of accounting software out there seems to ignore this feature as well.
Invoicing: (Rating: 10/10)
Invoicing with QuickBooks Plus is similar to other versions of QuickBooks. You can generate estimates and then easily convert those estimates into invoices. You can also customize your invoices for more professionalism.
If you want to collect payments, you can sign up for a QuickBooks Payment account and then collect credit card payments for invoices right through the program. You can also still direct people to PayPal, but they cannot pay via PayPal directly through your QuickBooks invoices. Invoices are sent via email and can also be printed and mailed out.Quickbooks Online Plus – New Invoice
(Click for Larger Image) If you have clients that are billed on a recurring basis, you can also automatically schedule those invoices and bill.
Multiple tax rates and currencies are accepted in QuickBooks Plus – which helps if you deal with clients from around the world.
Management: (Rating: 9/10)
QuickBooks Plus is much more for management than the Simple Start or Essentials versions. With Plus, you can have up to five employees access the system and you can even give employees and subcontractors limited access so that they may enter their hours worked.Quickbooks Online Plus – Inventory Control
(Click for Larger Image)Plus also allows you to track sales and profits based on locations (which help you better assess multiple locations and how they’re performing). You can also track billable hours by clients to see how profitable particular clients are for your company.
Plus is the only version that allows for inventory tracking too. While you cannot manage projects (something very few programs allow anyway) via QuickBooks Plus, the tracking helps. Time tracking isn’t available with Plus either – something we hope they add in the future.
There is also an extensive management reporting option that includes profit and loss statements, sales performance tracking, etc.
You can integrate your QuickBooks Plus into your QuickBooks POS and even add on payroll so that you can do everything you need from one software program.
Ease of Use: (Rating: 9/10)
Like most of the QuickBooks products, QuickBooks Plus is fairly easy to use.Quickbooks Online Plus – Dashboard
(Click for Larger Image)They offer step-by-step tutorials and prompts when you first create your account, have helpful reminders when you sign in and there are a plethora of tutorials out there to help you as well. The goal of QuickBooks Plus is to make accounting quick and convenient. From downloading and categorizing transactions for you to helping you quickly setup everything, you will find QuickBooks is one of the easier programs compared to others out there.
Access: (Rating: 10/10)
With the Plus account, you can add up to five people to access the account and up to two accountants will have their own login. You can also give employees and subcontractors limited access (and control what they access) to input their time and expenses for faster payroll processing.
Taxes: (Rating: 8/10)
QuickBooks Plus, like other QuickBooks online products, can only do so much for you at tax time. You cannot prepare or file your taxes via QuickBooks, but you can give your accountant access so that they can do so for you.
They do have numerous reports you can print to help you better input your taxes in your own tax software, but there’s no direct filing from the software and it is something we hope they add in the future, since their QuickBooks Self-Employed lets you file taxes from the program with an upgrade.
If you have employees, you can input time and print W2s as well as 1099s if you upgrade to their payroll account. You can also self-file payroll taxes or have the QuickBooks team handle that for you if you upgrade to a Payroll account. QuickBooks Plus with Payroll will range from $39.47 per month to $69.47 per month plus up to $2.00 per employee depending on which option you choose.
The one hiccup we have run into with Quickbooks Online Plus Tax programs has to do with filing the Minnesota Wage Detail report. Even though we are exempt it continues to tell us to file this report – but if we attempt to do so, the state of Minnesota just denies it anyway. So we constantly have a warning message telling us we are “x” number of days overdue in filing. We have brought this to Quickbooks attention over a year ago, but they have still not fixed the issue.
Pricing: (Rating: 9/10)
With QuickBooks Plus, you will pay a hefty amount each month, but the features you unlock are definitely worth it. And, once you add on payroll, your prices will get much higher. They do offer a 30-day free trial, but it is important to note that if you opt for the trial, you don’t get the introductory rate.
Introductory rates are for six months and start at $23.97 per month for six months and then $39.95 per month thereafter. You cannot do a one-time fee since this is an online version.
If you want to upgrade and add payroll, then you will pay $39.47 per month for six months and $78.95 thereafter plus $1.50 per employee for the Plus with Enhanced Payroll or $69.47 per month for six months and $138.95 per month thereafter plus $2.00 per employee for the Plus with Full Service Payroll.
Credit card payments will range from 1.75% plus $0.25 per swipe to $0.50 per bank payment and higher.
Customer Service: (Rating: 10/10)
Overall, customer service isn’t too bad with QuickBooks Plus or any QuickBooks product. You can reach customer service and tech support via email 24/7 or call them. They have plenty of tutorials and guides online as well for new users. They also have their online blog that will discuss new and upcoming features as well as highlight existing features and how to use them. They offer a lot of accounting advice too – including tips for taxes, categorizing expenses, etc.
There is also a live chat feature if you need to contact customer support. When you need support, you will go through a quick list and answer what type of support you need and their online system will direct you to which support is best. Customer support hours range from 6am to 6pm Monday through Friday and 6am to 3pm on Saturdays (PST).
With the BBB, QuickBooks (Intuit), has an A+ rating – which is always a good thing to see.

What Type of Business Could Use This Software?
QuickBooks Plus has a lot of great features, but they are not exactly designed for large corporations. While they could handle the volume and needs of a large company, most QuickBooks products are best suited for medium businesses. That being said, Plus does offer inventory tracking, payroll, etc. so they can accommodate businesses in numerous industries as well.
They are not ideal for freelancers or contractors, but that is because their accounting features are more for larger businesses managing contractors themselves.

What We Like About Quickbooks Plus
Free Trial and Introductory Rate: It’s nice when an accounting program lets you try it for free or at least enjoy a reduced rate while you give it a whirl. With QuickBooks, you can choose from a free 30 day trial or the introductory rate for six months. You cannot do both, but at least you can try it one way or the other for free or at least cheaper until you decide if it’s the right program for you. The discounts also apply to their Plus with payroll (the free trial doesn’t include payroll).
Online Accountant Access: It’s nice when accountants can access your software online – and it certainly makes it quicker to do taxes. With QuickBooks Plus you can have up to two different accountants access the online account at any time.
Inventory Tracking: Not all QuickBooks products come with inventory tracking – and not all accounting software comes with it either. QuickBooks Plus includes inventory, which is an integral part of managing a business. Their inventories can track everything from raw goods to materials and supplies as well as finished, ready-to-sell products. You can add SKUs, reminders for reordering, and track the value of your stock in case it is lost, damaged or becomes obsolete.
Employee and Subcontractor Access: With Plus, you can allow limited access to employees as well as subcontractors so that they can enter their time. This simplifies how much input you have to do on your own and can speed up the payroll process.
Budgeting: Budgeting is extremely important for established as well as new businesses and yet most accounting products leave out budgets. With QuickBooks Plus, you can establish a company budget, plan for income in the future and even plan for upcoming expenses so that you are in better control of your company’s resources.

What We Don't Like About Quickbooks Plus
High Cost for Payroll: Like all QuickBooks products, Plus comes with a very high cost for payroll. Not only does your monthly amount increase, but then you are charged anywhere from $1.50 to $2.00 per employee. You can print 1099s for the regular monthly price without adding on payroll, but to file payroll taxes, monitor employee costs and actually furnish a paycheck, you must upgrade.
PayPal Not Included: PayPal is becoming one of the most widely used payment gateways for businesses of all sizes. While you can download transactions from PayPal, you cannot integrate PayPal payments into your invoices. Because most businesses want to collect via their PayPal account, this may be a hassle.
No Time Tracking: It would be nice if Plus had time tracking. While they offer employee timesheets, there is no physical time tracking app to ensure all billable hours are accounted for. There are some accounting programs out there that offer this (though very few) and it is something we hope they add in the future to make themselves more productive for companies that rely on hourly billing.
